A Mindful Community for People With ALS and Their Primary Caregivers

Amyotrophic Lateral SclerosisCaregiver Burden

The psychological impact of ALS on patients and caregivers is high, significantly affecting their quality of life (QOL). Despite this impact, there is not much research about psychological interventions that could reduce psychological distress and improve QOL. The efficacy of mindfulness-based treatments for the improvement of QOL was previously demonstrated by the investigator's group. Despite preliminary positive results, treatment efficacy tends to weaken over time. The investigators believe that a robust solution to maintain efficacy is to maximize the utilization of technology and emerging social platforms, establishing a "mindful community" to promote and continuously reinforce mindfulness. This project's primary aims are 1) to develop a "mindful" online community of people with ALS and their caregivers, and 2) to test its efficacy in QOL improvement. This two-part intervention consists of 1) optimizing the investigator's prior e-learning platform with a three-week program including cognitive exercises, videos and lectures to increase participants' mindfulness; and 2) involving participants in a "mindfulness community" within a social sharing forum. Assessments will be performed before and immediately post-treatment as well as 3- and 6-months post-program comparing subjects undergoing the intervention to a control group.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on Fatigue Interference in Patients With Advanced Lung Cancer...

Lung CancerAdvanced Cancer1 more

Lung cancer is a malignant tumour that has transformed from a single cancer disease into one of the most striking global health problems. Lung cancer has an insidious onset, and most patients are first diagnosed with the middle and advanced stages. Cancer-related fatigue is the most common and distressing symptom reported by lung cancer patients. For cancer patients, fatigue has a lasting impact on physical, psychological and social functions, and interferes with activities and participating in life events, thereby worsening the health-related quality of life. Family members have a key role in providing advanced lung cancer patients with informational, instrumental, and emotional support, which is crucial to patients' adaptation to the advanced illness and living a meaningful cancer life. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is the third-wave cognitive behavioural therapy to improve functioning and health-related quality of life by increasing psychological flexibility. The study aims to examine test the feasibility and acceptability, and preliminary effects of online ACT on fatigue interference in patients with advanced lung cancer and caregiver burden.

Efficacy of VR Educational Program on Empathy and Attitudes Toward Dementia in Caregivers

DementiaCaregiver Burden

We plan to recruit around 600 participants and randomly assign them to either a control group or an experimental group. The experimental group will participate in a dementia educational program combining VR lasting approximately 2-3 hours. Data would be collected from related questionnaires to investigate whether combining VR with dementia education can effectively improve participants' empathy and attitude toward dementia.

Data-driven Approaches to Healthcare Provider Resilience & Burnout During COVID-19

BurnoutProfessional3 more

The United States is battling dual pandemics: healthcare provider (HCP) exhaustion and COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic death toll has surpassed 595,000 and continues to climb as the worldwide outbreak continues. Moreover, we have yet to understand the health impacts of "long-COVID". As evidenced by the national burnout epidemic in HCPs, persistent workplace stress not only impacts personal provider wellbeing, but also influences effective practice and patient outcomes. To address this need, we propose a 4-year, multi-site, four-arm parallel-group randomized clinical trial (RCT) comparing 2 non-pharmacological interventions: Transcendental Meditation (TM) and Experience Resolution Methodology (ERM) to Treatment as Usual (TAU). Participation in this study lasts up to 24 months for enrolled participants and is considered minimal risks.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Health Status of People Aged 75 and Over and Their Caregivers...

AgingSARS-CoV-2 Infection4 more

The measures to control the transmissibility of the Covid-19 pandemic have changed the daily routines of the population, increasing sedentary lifestyles, decreasing outdoor physical activity and limiting contact with neighbors, family and friends. This could be having negative consequences for the health of vulnerable people. The investigators want to know how this situation has affected the health of people aged 75 years or older and their caregivers and how the circumstances experienced may mark new care needs. To this end, will be analyzed clinical data, follow up people who have become ill with COVID-19 and those who have not, and interview groups of caregivers and patients to hear about the personal impact of the pandemic on them. This will allow us to explore what changes are needed in health care to achieve an improvement in the health and quality of life of this population. CUIDAMOS+75 seeks the commitment of the population and of the different people in charge of the health services from the very beginning.
