Comparison of Ischemic Compression Therapy and Kinesiotaping in Chronic Neck Pain

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of ischemic compression (IC) and kinesio taping (KT) treatments on blood flow, tissue stiffness and thickness, pain, and joint range of motion on the upper trapezius muscle of individuals with chronic neck pain. Methods: In this study 22 individuals between the ages of 20-35 were randomly assigned to 3 groups: Group1, which received IC; Group2, received KT; Group3 (control) received exercise, for 2 days and 4 weeks. Pain was measured with VAS, pain threshold with J-Tech Algometer, range of motion with BASELINE Digital Inclinometer, ultrasonographic measurements for blood flow, tissue stiffness and tissue thickness using Acuson S3000. All measurements were performed twice; before and after treatment.

Background: Non-specific neck pain (NS-NP) is characterized by pain in structures located in the region between the superior nuchal line and the spinal process of the first thoracic vertebra, without association with any specific systemic disease provided by multifactorial and/or little known causes. Objective: The objective of the present study will be to verify the clinical effects of MV through visceral nociceptive inhibition in NS-NP patients with functional dyspepsia. Methods: In this study sixty NS-NP patients with functional dyspepsia (age: 18 and 50 years) will be randomized in into two groups: visceral manipulation group (VMG) (n =30) and control group (CG) (n =30). The VMG will be treated with visceral manipulation to the stomach and liver wile CG received placebo treatment. The immediate effects and 7 days after treatment will be evaluated through pain, cervical range, and electromyographic activity of the upper trapezius.

Dry Needling and Electromyographic Changes in Neck Pain

There is evidence suggesting that patients with mechanical neck pain exhibit higher activity of the superficial neck flexor muscles during the execution of the cranio-cervical flexion test. In addition, some studies have reported the presence of active trigger points in the neck flexor and extensor muscles. Since preliminary evidence suggests that trigger points can affect motor control behaviour, it is possible that management of these trigger points with dry needling could be effective for improving muscle activity during low-load activities, such as the cranio-cervical flexion test. Therefore, the aim of this study will be to investigate the effects on electromyographical activity, pressure pain thresholds and cervical range of motion after the application of dry needling over active TrPs in the upper trapezius muscle in patients with mechanical neck pain.

Small clinical pilot studies have shown that vacuum massage-related techniques such as traditional dry cupping can reduce musculoskeletal pain such as back and neck pain. At the same time, little is yet known about the potential mechanisms of action of these therapies. A vacuum pump induces a massaging effect of the skin including the deeper tissue layers. The resulting massage technique corresponds to a kind of tissue manipulation similar to dry cupping. In this procedure, suction force and air flow can be individually adjusted. This is an advantage that can be used for patients with varying degrees of sensitivity or who are preloaded by patients with varying degrees of sensitivity or a history of pain. The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanisms of action of the therapeutic effects of the vacuum cupping in chronic neck or back pain using the biomarker QST.
