Build Your Parenting Toolkit: Guiding Children to Become Flexible Thinkers

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)Developmental Disorder

This pilot project is a cooperative effort between the Leisure in Fun Environments (LIFE) Program and the Specialized Communication Resources for Children (SCRC) Program at the Rehabilitation Centre for Children (RCC). The investigators will blend and enhance two pre-existing programs in order to provide a new, specialized program for parents of children with ASD or developmental delay. The two programs that will be blended together are "Promoting Flexible Thinking and Interaction with Your Child at Home" and "Saturday Cooking Club." This new program will be a series of ten workshops that alternates between "parents only" learning sessions and practical "cooking club" sessions that allow parents to focus on practicing what they are learning with their child. These programs are based on the principles of Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®), which focuses on providing opportunities to establish a guided participation relationship, which will lead to development of dynamic intelligence and important social thinking abilities. The program is individualized to each child and builds on the principles of typical development to assist the child in achieving social competence. Using this program, children are expected to develop sociability in a naturally progressing order of complexity.

Weight Loss and Maintenance for Individuals With Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (IDD)

Weight Loss

Individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) have obesity rates that exceed those in the general population, consume energy dense diets, and perform very little physical activity (PA). Overweight and obesity are independent risk factors for chronic disease such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease in both the general population and those with IDD. The investigators modified the Stop Light Diet (SLDm) to include reduced energy pre-packaged meals (PM) for 6 months, encouraged consumption of low energy shakes and 35 fruits and vegetables (F/V) per week. The investigators will compare participants who use the SLDm with participants who use a reduced energy and fat diet with meal plans, based off of the current American Dietetic Association recommended car for weight reduction plan.

Weight Management for Adolescents With IDD

Developmental DisabilitiesWeight Loss4 more

The goal of this study is to explore the impact of two different diets (conventional vs. enhanced stop light) and two different delivery systems (face-to-face vs. remote) on weight across 18 months in overweight and obese adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

A Multiple Baseline Design Study to Investigate the Effectiveness of OT-SI Using an Intensive Intervention...

Motor Coordination or Function; Developmental Disorder

The investigators hypothesize that children completing 30 sessions of occupational therapy using a sensory integration approach (OT-SI) will demonstrate positive changes in outcome measures related to motor coordination, functional performance and sensory processing (changes pre-post test).

Promoting Physical Growth and Positive Development in Severely Stunted Guatemalan Children

MalnutritionDevelopmental Disabilities

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of an intensive home-based education intervention targeting severely stunted Guatemalan children for catch up growth and improved development. Half of the children in the study will receive standard of care, which includes micronutrient supplementation and a food ration. The other half of children in the study will receive, in addition to the above, home-based dietary assessment and individualized parental nutrition education.

Neuroimaging GABA Physiology in Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS)Idiopathic Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD)

The investigators wish to compare the brain distribution of GABA(A) receptors and GABA levels in young adult males with Fragile X Syndrome compared to idiopathic intellectual developmental disorder. The radiopharmaceutical [18F]flumazenil has been used to study GABA(A) receptor distribution in other genetic syndromes with autistic features; however, despite overwhelming evidence supporting the importance of the GABAergic system in FXS, no clinical investigation of this system in human FXS has been reported in the literature. Therefore, this study will provide the first in vivo comprehensive examination of the GABAergic system in FXS using hybrid positron emission tomography/ magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI).
