Therapeutic Equivalence of OsvaRen® Tablets and OsvaRen® Granules

Phosphate binders are crucial to the control of elevated phosphate levels in patients with chronic kidney disease. With the new formulation of granules the pill burden of patients is sought to be reduced. This study is about efficacy and safety of the new drug formulation and compares it to the "old" formulation which are film-coated tablets.

Anaemia is a condition in which blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells. It can also occur if red blood cells do not contain enough haemoglobin, an oxygen carrying part of blood. Anaemia is common in patients with chronic kidney disease. Healthy kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce the proper number of red blood cells needed to carry oxygen to vital organs. Chronic kidney disease is a general term that means that the kidneys are not functioning to their full potential. The study drug, BAY85-3934, is being evaluated as a drug to increase the body's ability to produce erythropoietin. The purpose of this study is to find out if the study drug, a tablet taken orally, is safe and effective for the treatment of anaemia associated with chronic kidney disease. The study will enroll 120 patients at multiple locations in Europe, Asia and Australia. Participation will involve a screening visit and between 12 and 14 study visits scheduled over a period of approximately 5 to 7 months. The estimated total duration of study treatment will be 16 weeks. During these scheduled visits patients will undergo a number of procedures to confirm efficacy and safety of the study drug, including measurement of heart rate and blood pressure, physical examination, Electrocardiogram and blood/urine sample collection for laboratory tests. The study will be conducted at 5 hospitals in the UK. Bayer HealthCare AG is funding this research.

End-Stage Kidney Disease

The PEDAL study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a 9-month intradialytic exercise training intervention designed to improve quality of life (QOL) and alleviate functional limitations in patients with stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) who are on haemodialysis. Exercise rehabilitation will be compared against established treatment options available within UK NHS haemodialysis (HD) units. A qualitative substudy will also investigate the experience and acceptability of the intervention for both participants and members of the renal care team. In addition, we want to examine whether this type of additional exercise treatment is cost effective within the health service setting. PEDAL is designed as a multi centre randomised clinical trial (RCT) and will recruit 380 adult patients who have been on HD for at least 3 months, from 10 HD sites located in Scotland, England and Wales. The type of exercise programming will consist of cycling exercise performed during each dialysis session plus a muscle conditioning programme performed twice per week. All exercise sessions will be supervised by a physiotherapy assistant. The exercise prescription will be individualised for all patients on the basis of their fitness and clinical status. The main objective is to examine the impact of exercise rehabilitation on quality of life and well being of patients. We hypothesise that the exercise training delivered during haemodialysis treatment will significantly improve the functional limitations/abilities of the patients leading to the detection of clinically beneficial improvement in quality of life outcome, as measured by the KDQOL-36 physical composite score (PCS) at the primary end point.

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of gum disease in affecting the long term prognosis of renal patients. This disease if untreated causes inflammatory response throughout the body. If the subject has gum disease, he/she will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups. The study investigates what happens to inflammatory markers in blood and saliva after you are treated for gum disease.

Study of Dietary Phosphate and Mineral Homeostasis in Early Chronic Kidney Disease

This study is designed to describe the physiological response to increased and decreased dietary phosphate intake on various parameters of mineral metabolism in the blood and urine of individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3 and 4 with normal serum phosphate levels. This detailed study will give us a far greater understanding of the role of diet in abnormal mineral homeostasis early in the progression of this chronic disease. The findings of this study will help both physicians and dietitians better determine the optimal time to introduce dietary therapy in CKD.
