The continuously increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, and COPD is a major health problem in developed countries and is mainly caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Most important lifestyle related causes of morbidity and mortality are smoking, obesity and physical inactivity, and increasing rates of obesity and physical inactivity in combination with smoking will lead to an increase in the number of patients with lifestyle related diseases in the coming decades. There is, therefore, an urgent need to identify and establish strategies and to implement interventions, allowing for the identification and management of citizens at increased risk of disease. Two recent systematic reviews of general practice based health checks suggest that people at increased risk of a chronic disease may benefit from a targeted approach to health checks. Targeted or selective preventive actions are a generally accepted and well integrated part of the health care system (e.g. treatment of hypertension and hyperlipidemia). However, selective prevention is challenged in terms of how to identify citizens at increased risk of disease in the general population in order to start the indicated preventive actions. The aim of the present pilot study is to test the acceptability, feasibility and short-term effect of a selective preventive program that systematically helps citizens evaluate individual risk of lifestyle related disease and offers targeted and coordinated preventive services in the primary health care sector. The intervention comprises four elements: 1) Systematic collection of information on lifestyle risk factors using questionnaire 2) Risk estimation and stratification into risk groups based on questionnaire data and information from the electronic patient record (EPR) using validated risk estimation models, 3) An individual electronic health profile with personalized advise on lifestyle change and 4) targeted preventive services at the general practitioner (GP) or the municipality for citizens at risk of lifestyle disease and citizens with risk behavior, respectively. The intervention is supported by a patient-centered health information system that facilitates informed patient action and integrates general practice and municipality health care providers.

Bone-marrow-derived progenitor cells (EPCS) play an important role in neovascularization and tumor growth. In lung cancer, angiogenesis is an important event in mechanisms of tumor proliferation and metastasis. Recent evidences suggest that EPCS can be recruited and differentiate in mature endothelial cells to form new blood vessels. The role of EPCs in NSCLC is unclear. In contrast, angiogenic drugs are proposed combined to systemic chemotherapy in NSCLC. The aim of this study is to identify EPCs in peripheral blood from patients with NSCLC, by comparison to Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease (COPD), an inflammatory disease.

The aim of this study is to see if the Vapotherm High Flow Therapy (HFT) device is effective to provide breathing support to patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. The investigators believe that patients using HFT will not require as much use of therapies that provide pressure through a face mask, and are already recognized by FDA as support therapies for respiratory insufficiency.

The Impact of Anemia of Chronic Disease on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients

Hypothesis: The first part of the study is a survey on the prevalence of anemia of chronic disease (ACD) among COPD patients. The 2nd and 3rd part will test 2 null hypotheses (Ho): 1.serum inflammatory markers and plasma erythropoietin do not differ between COPD patients with and without ACD and 2. exercise capacity does not differ between COPD patients with and without ACD. Rationale-Aim: ACD is an immune driven disorder, developing in subjects suffering from chronic inflammatory diseases. COPD is a disorder very likely to be associated to ACD due to its systemic inflammatory dimension. Currently, data on the prevalence of ACD and on the level of inflammatory markers which are implicated in the pathogenesis of ACD in COPD subjects are limited and controversial. Furthermore, there is no data on the effect of ACD on exercise capacity of COPD subjects. Based to the aforementioned, this study has three goals: to determine the prevalence and the epidemiologic characteristics of ACD in a population of clinical stable COPD patients to investigate whether the levels of serum inflammatory markers and of plasma erythropoietin differ between COPD patients with ACD and without ACD to determine potential differences regarding the aerobic exercise capacity between these two groups, using the cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).

The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of nebulized formoterol fumarate (Perforomist) to dry-powder inhaler formoterol fumarate (Foradil). Perforomist is a solution that is made into very fine spray (using a nebulizer) that is then breathed in over 10-15 minutes. Foradil is taken in a single quick, deep inhalation.
