Digital Game: A Scale to Evaluate the Perioperative Cognitive Function

Cognition DisordersImpaired Cognition1 more

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive dysfunction is a frequent adverse event in the postoperative period, especially in elderly patients. The tests commonly used for the detection of postoperative cognitive dysfunction are time-consuming and with variable sensitivity and specificity and difficult routine use. Applying a difficult battery of cognitive tests decreases the viability of adopting measures to increase preoperative cognitive reserve and methods for prevention, diagnosis and rehabilitation of cases of Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction (POCD), it is desirable to search for alternative methods diagnoses.

A Multi-domain Lifestyle Intervention Among Aged Community-residents in Zhejiang, China

Cognitive ImpairmentAlzheimer Disease8 more

A study conducted in Finland discovered that a multidomain intervention, consisting of physical activity, nutritional guidance, cognitive training, social activities, and management of vascular risk factors, effectively decelerated cognitive decline in healthy older adults who were at an increased risk of cognitive decline. The HERITAGE study is a 2-year clustered randomized controlled trial (clustered-RCT) that explores the efficacy of a multidomain intervention among 1200 elderly residents with a higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia in Zhejiang Province, China

Cognitive Outcomes After Dexmedetomidine Sedation in Cardiac Surgery Patients

DeliriumCognitive Dysfunction16 more

Anesthesia is a drug induced, reversible, comatose state that facilitates surgery and it is widely assumed that cognition returns to baseline after anesthetics have been eliminated. However, many patients have persistent memory impairment for weeks to months after surgery. Cardiac surgery appears to carry the highest risk of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). These cognitive deficits are associated with increased mortality, prolonged hospital stay and loss of independence. The investigators propose to investigate the role of Dexmedetomidine (DEX) in preventing long-term POCD after cardiac surgery and enhancing early postoperative recovery. It is anticipated that DEX will be the first effective preventative therapy for POCD, improve patient outcomes, and reduce length of stay and healthcare costs.

Pilot Study on Training Emerging Adults Skills in Navigating College

Alcohol AbuseCognitive Deficit in Attention

Lifetime risk for developing an alcohol use disorder increases with earlier onset of alcohol consumption. This risk may reflect a tendency for escalated alcohol intake among youth due to immature executive control, leading to more frequent binge drinking, which is associated with more alcohol-related problems. Binge drinking is associated with deficits in behavioral flexibility, which may suggest impaired control networks that contribute to automatic behavior. Individuals with an alcohol or substance use disorder (A/SUD) exhibit attentional bias toward drug- or alcohol-related stimuli that have attained salience through consistent use. Reward history increases attention towards non-drug stimuli, even among individuals with no lifetime A/SUD. Preliminary data (from Dr. Boettiger's lab) from a nationally representative US adult sample using data collected via Prolific found that a questionnaire measure of mindfulness moderates the relationship between alcohol misuse and attention to reward. Given evidence that heavy alcohol drinking impairs behavioral flexibility, which in turn promotes escalating intake, insight into the relationship between mindfulness and behavioral flexibility could inspire new strategies to prevent alcohol and substance use disorders in people at elevated risk.

The SINgapore GERiatric Intervention Study to Reduce Cognitive Decline and Physical Frailty (SINGER)...

Cognitive ImpairmentAlzheimer Disease8 more

A study in Finland found that a multidomain intervention of physical activity, nutritional guidance, cognitive training, social activities and management of vascular risk factors slowed cognitive decline in healthy older adults at increased risk of cognitive decline. A 6-month pilot study was initiated in Singapore, which demonstrated the cultural feasibility and practicality of the FINGER interventions and a set of locally adapted interventions in an Asian population. The SINGER study is a 2-year randomized controlled trial that aims to test the efficacy and safety of these lifestyle changes, including diet and cardiovascular risk factor management, cognitive and physical exercises, in delaying cognitive decline in older adults at risk of dementia.

Attention Deficit Disorder With HyperactivitySensory Integration Disorder5 more

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a very common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood characterized by short attention span, impulsivity and hyperactivity. It is also known that sensory integration problems are seen together with the basic symptoms of ADHD. Studies indicate that children with ADHD have difficulties in perceiving and processing sensory stimuli, and in relation to this, they have difficulty in producing appropriate sensory responses at school, at home and in social environments. However, it was observed that the interventions related to ADHD did not focus on the sensory-motor dimension enough, and focused more on cognitive or social skills. Although current research indicates the presence of sensory integration disorder in children with ADHD, there are no studies showing the effectiveness of sensory integration intervention. Our study was planned to examine the effect of Ayres Sensory Integration intervention on sensory-motor, cognitive, behavioral skills and social participation in children with ADHD. Materials and Methods: After the evaluation, 90 children with ADHD will be included in the study by dividing them into intervention (n=45) and control (n=45) groups by simple randomization method. Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy intervention will be applied to the intervention group for 10 weeks, 3 times a week, with a session duration of 1 hour, while the control group will continue the drug treatment and after a waiting period of 10 weeks, Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy will be applied after the second evaluation. Participants, Sensory Profile (SP), Sensory Integration and Praxis Test (SIPT), Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC), Stroop Test TBAG Form (Stroop TBAG), Childhood Executive Functions Inventory (CHEXI), Participation and Environment Scale for Children and Adolescents (PEM-CY), Conners Teacher Rating Scale (CTRS), Conners Parent Rating Scale (CPRS), Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test-2 (BOT-2) and Goal Achievement Scale (GAS) both before and before intervention. and post-group change as well as between-group differences will be evaluated.

Cognitive Rehabilitation in People With Metabolic Syndrome and Mild Cognitive Deficits

Metabolic SyndromeCognitive Deficit

The goal of this clinical trial is to investigate the possibility of rehabilitation of mild cognitive deficits in people with metabolic syndrome. We aim to implement a cognitive training program on patients with metabolic syndrome and cognitive deficits, and examine its effectiveness both post-intervention (3 months) and after 12 months. Researchers will compare two groups, the experimental group that will receive the computerized cognitive training and the control group that will receive no training.

LUPUS Brain: tACS to Target the Neurophysiology of Depression, Cognitive Deficits, and Pain in Patients...

Systemic Lupus ErythematosusDepression

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a type of non-invasive transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on patients diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who are experiencing depression. Targeting depression in patients with SLE may provide benefit to these patients, as there is a clear relationship between chronic pain and depression. The investigators propose that a tACS stimulation montage that was previously used in depression could be beneficial to patients with SLE, resulting in reduced depression symptoms, thus resulting in reduced chronic pain and cognitive difficulties.

Sleep Disturbance in MCI: A Study of a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Digital Intervention

Cognitive DysfunctionInsomnia3 more

This study aims to determine the feasibility of a randomized-controlled trial of digital cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) for sleep and cognitive performance in older adults with MCI and insomnia symptoms (50-80 years). The trial will be completed online, and participants will be recruited from the community across Australia.
