The Effects of a Sub-maximal Exercise Program on Adolescents Who Sustained a Concussion
ConcussionMild5 morePatients who sustain a concussion will undergo a sub-maximal exercise protocol throughout their recovery. Cerebrovascular function, heart rate, and symptom severity, and exercise volume will be monitored throughout.
Treating Persistent Post-concussion Symptoms With Exercise
Brain InjuriesTraumatic4 moreThe objective of this study is to investigate an aerobic exercise program as a treatment for adults with persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) following mild traumatic brain injury. In this delayed-start trial participants will be initially randomized into either a 6-week low-impact stretching protocol or 12-week aerobic exercise protocol. Following the completion of the stretching protocol participants will continue on to complete the aerobic exercise protocol in full. 56 participants aged 18-65 yrs will be recruited from the Calgary Brain Injury Program (CBIP), including the Early Concussion Education Program at Foothills Medical Centre, Calgary Pain Program, University of Calgary Sports Medicine Centre acute concussion clinic and a physiotherapy clinic (Tower Physio) all of which are located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Participants will complete an online follow up (symptom questionnaires and questions regarding exercise behaviour) 3 and 9 weeks post intervention.

Brain InjuriesTraumaticRebion has developed a device, the Rebion trauma tool (referred to as the head and intraocular trauma tool, or "HITT"), that detects ocular fixation and alignment using a binocular retinal scan. Preliminary data obtained from hospitalized patients with a clinically-confirmed traumatic brain injury (TBI) and uninjured controls indicates that the device can detect changes in ocular fixation, alignment, and saccades that are related to brain injury. This study seeks to evaluate the ability of the Rebion trauma tool to assess perturbations in eye movements resulting from TBI. The study will enroll 100 TBI patients and 100 controls.
Delivery of Digital Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Following Concussion
ConcussionMildConcussion is common and patients can go on to suffer with a constellation of symptoms which impacts their functional outcome and quality of life. Patient provision with information about their concussion and subsequent follow-up is highly variable. The investigators have developed HeadOn - a web application that delivers a CBT programme to patients following concussion. In this study, the investigators would like to examine the feasibility of digitally delivering a course of CBT to patients following concussion.

Dual-task Assessment and Rehabilitation for Individuals With Residual Symptoms After mTBI
Brain Injury Traumatic MildConcussion1 moreThis research aims to develop an intervention that combines mTBI-specific motor and cognitive challenges into a progressive and challenging rehabilitation program. We plan to develop and refine a combined motor and cognitive intervention using healthy athletic young adults (n=12) and people with a positive history of non-resolving mTBI (n=12). We will conduct limited feasibility testing by conducting 6 week training sessions with each subject group. We also plan to identify best measures for determining readiness for duty or full function by incorporating and testing 3 dual-task assessment measures using state-of-the-art wearable sensors to quantify movement.
LED Therapy for the Treatment of Concussive Brain Injury
Brain ConcussionA double blind randomized trial of light-emitting diode (LED) therapy for patients suffering from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Patients seen in the Sports Concussion Clinic with cognitive symptoms lasting for greater than 4 weeks will be randomized to either placebo therapy (controls) or treatment with LED therapy (cases). Both cases and controls would complete post-concussion symptom scales Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS), and ImPACT studies on entry into the study and at weeks 3 and 6, or earlier if their symptoms resolve before the end of the 6 week period.
