Lethal Congenital Malformations: Palliative Therapy From An Islamic Point of View

Congenital Malformations

To prove that palliative therapy can be practised for congenital lethal malformations within the Islamic Code of Ethics. After defining lethal malformation no respiratory support is offered and newborns are provided with compassionate care.

Rehabilitation of Adolescents and Young Adults With Congenital Heart Diseases

Heart DefectsCongenital2 more

The investigators aim to measure the impact of a rehabilitation program in congenital cardiology in terms of health related quality of life. The orginality of the rehabilitation program consists in its design : initial hospitalizationfor a short period of time (5 days) at the rehabilitation center, followed by 11 weeks of rehabilitation at home under the supervision of a specialized sports trainer.

Prevalence of Serum-Vitamin D Abnormalities, Periodontitis and Anaemia in Patients With Melasma...

MelasmaPeriodontitis2 more

Melasma is a commonly pigmention characterized by melanotic patches on the face. literature searched revealed that periodontitis and vitamin D deficiency have occurred along with anemia. Actinic associated factors may be indirectly related to vitamin D, melasma contributes to sun exposed area of face.To correlate melasma with clinical evidence of periodontitis and vitamin D serum analysis along side hb %. Patients with facial melasma between 30-70yrs of either gender formed Group A (95). Anaemia and periodontitis were Clinically checked. Additionally serum analysis of vitamin D and hb percentage were analysed. Similar procedure was carried out on controls which had Group B (95) patients with no melasma on face. The study revealed significant correlation between melasma and periodontitis with vitamin D abnormalities (p value<.05), where as insignificant correlation between melasma and Hb%. The correlation between melasma, vitamin d changes and periodontitis may prompt the clinician to check for any such changes in any patient. Melasma in patients with periodontitis and serum vitamin D changes might be a considered as a syndrome.

Optimisation of Hearing Aid Fitting

Hearing LossHearing Abnormality

This study aims to explore if objective brain responses to speech stimuli (words and running speech) can be used to evaluate hearing aid fitting in adults. Objective brain responses would be beneficial, as they could be used to evaluate hearing with people who are incapable or unwilling to provide subjective responses. The study aims to determine if EEG responses to speech sounds are sensitive to the effects of hearing aids for hearing aid users. Secondary, the study will look into the need for using speech stimuli in order to obtain more robust responses compared to current clinical standards.

The China-Anhui Birth Cohort Study (C-ABCS)

Environmental ExposuresOther Pregnancy With Abortive Outcome2 more

The China-Anhui Birth Cohort Study (C-ABCS) was set up to examine the delayed, cumulative and interactive effects of maternal environmental exposures on birth outcomes and children's development. The C-ABCS recruited pregnant women from six major cities of Anhui province, China, between November 2008 and October 2010. A range of data (including demographic, obstetric, occupational, nutritional and psychosocial factors) were collected by both interviews and laboratory tests. In each trimester, women's blood samples were drawn, and pregnancy complications were abstracted from physician's medical records. By the end of 2011, birth outcomes/birth defects were observed/identified by clinicians within 12 months after the delivery of 11 421 singleton live births of six cities and those outcomes among the remaining 2033 live births are still being observed. In addition, 4668 children from Ma'anshan city will be further followed up during the pre-school period till they reach adolescence to obtain the data on familial environmental exposures as well as children's physical, psychological, behavioural and sexual development. The interview data and information on laboratory examinations are available on request from archives in the Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Population Health & Aristogenics.

Newborn Screening for Critical Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital Cardiovascular Malformation

Previous studies have examined the usefulness of pulse oximetry or oxygen saturation to screen for left-sided cardiac lesions. These studies have shown that the occurrence of critical congenital cardiac malformations among asymptomatic newborns is high; the technique of pulse oximetry is reliable for detection of ductal dependant left-sided lesions, simple to operate(requires little time and can be done in the newborn nursery) and is cost effective; there is effective follow-up test (heart ultrasound) and available interventions have an effect on outcome for diagnosed newborns. The importance of this research project is to examine the overall helpfulness of measuring oximetry in newborn infants using somatic oximetry, as well ast to prepare for a population based study in the state of Florida.

NCGENES: North Carolina Clinical Genomic Evaluation by NextGen Exome Sequencing

CancerCardiovascular Disease3 more

This study is part of a larger consortium project investigating the validity and best use of next-generation sequencing (in particular, whole exome sequencing, or WES) in clinical care. This sub-project is investigating benefits and harms of providing WES diagnostic and different types of incidental findings to adult patients and parents of pediatric patients who undergo WES because they have symptoms suggesting genetic disease.
