When the literature is examined, it has not been found that the use of massage applications in relation to the functional level of individuals who have undergone abdominal surgery. We think that our study will be the first in this field. Therefore, this study will lay the groundwork for future studies on the subject. In the future, it is aimed to establish a standardized evaluation method to determine the functional levels of individuals who have undergone abdominal surgery and to determine the ideal duration and frequency when a decision is made to apply foot massage in the future with the data obtained as a result of this method. In this study, the effectiveness of foot massage on the functional level of individuals with high post-surgical kinesiophobia will be investigated.

ExerG: Video Game-based Physical Cognitive Training for Patients: a Usability Study

Gait DisordersNeurologic7 more

Video game-based training programs, in the following referred to as "exergames" are an innovative digital training approach to simultaneously train physical and cognitive functions and increase training motivation for various populations. Patients who are differently limited in their physical and cognitive performance due to a decline in functioning can profit from a motivating and combined physical-cognitive training approach. An interdisciplinary team of movement scientists, sports and training experts, as well as game and industrial designers developed an innovative and immersive video game-based training product for patients - the ExerCube training software licence. The exergame development focused on a user-centred process together with the target population. The ExerCube training software licence is an exergame training product that includes immersive mixed-reality training programs (or video games) for patients. Depending on the patient's training requirements, the therapists can choose from the training program repertoire. The patients control the training program (or video game) by specific (whole) body movements. To present the virtual training programs from the ExerCube training software licence in the physical environment, the ExerCube hardware and harness system is used to serve as a physical training room. It allows the virtual video game environment to be presented in the physical world. This summative usability study aims to assess the training system's safety, usability and validate the user experience. Primary end-users (defined as patients aged 18 and above) and secondary end-users (defined as sports scientists, training therapists or physiotherapists/occupational therapists with a focus on sports/training therapy) will test and review the system in different testing scenarios.

Eye MOvement DesensItisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) for FunctIonal Neurological Disorder...

Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body send and receive signals, rather than due to neurological disease or injury. This causes a range of neurological symptoms such as seizures, shaking, weakness, and paralysis. The symptoms are associated with significant distress and disability. Treatment for FND in the United Kingdom is limited, and the evidence-base for treatment is poor, despite it being a common presentation. A psychological therapy called cognitive-behavioural therapy has been found to be beneficial, but it does not help everyone. EMDR is an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder, but it can also be helpful with other conditions. There is a small amount of case study evidence that EMDR can be useful at treating FND, but proper scientific evaluation is needed. This research aims to evaluate the possibility of delivering, and potential benefit, of EMDR for FND. If the study shows that it is feasible and potentially beneficial, a larger trial will be designed. The study will recruit 50 participants who have specific functional neurological symptoms: weakness, walking difficulties, jerks, shaking, and/or seizures from a Neuropsychiatry Service. Participants will be allocated to EMDR, and routine medical appointments, or routine medical appointments alone. Allocation will be carried out by a computer programme. Those allocated to EMDR will be offered 8-16 weekly therapy sessions, completed within 6 months, and follow-up session 1 month after therapy has ended. Participants will be able to choose whether to attend therapy in-person or via an online video conferencing platform. Participants will complete questionnaires regarding health-related functioning, FND, mental health, and healthcare utilisation. These questionnaires will be completed at the beginning, 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months. Some participants will attend interviews about experiences of treatment.

Exploring Functional Paralysis With Advanced Magnetic Resonance Modalities

Functional Neurological Symptom DisorderParalysis1 more

In functional neurological disorder (FND), neurological symptoms are present, such as paralysis, weakness and disturbed sensation of limbs, although clinically no abnormalities can be found. It is a poorly understood disorder with uncertain diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. In this study, the subtype functional paralysis is investigated with advanced neuroimaging techniques that go beyond standard clinical examinations. In previous research on FND, healthy volunteers have generally been used as a control group. However, since people with functional paralysis have similar symptoms to people with spinal cord injuries (SCI), it is intended to compare the three groups to find similarities and differences. With the proposed methods, the goal is to gain a detailed understanding of FND regarding nerve cell metabolism, diffusion pathways and neuronal networks involved in cognitive processes such as motor inhibition (reaction or no reaction depending on situation). Neurophysiological data, clinical assessments and questionnaires are carried out in addition to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The aim is to enrol 75 participants in this study, i.e. 25 people with FND, 25 people with SCI and 25 healthy control subjects. The overall goal of the study is to find markers for FND for use in future studies to improve diagnosis and individualise therapy recommendation for both people with SCI and people with FND. Therefore, this study is a relevant step to understand FND and to diagnose this specific disease using objective MRI based diagnostic tools.

The Role of Oxytocin and Interoception in Functional Neurological Disorder

Functional Neurological Disorder

The main goal of this project is to better understand the role of oxytocin and Interoception in FND. More specifically oxytocin's association with precision weighing, prediction errors and priors in the interoceptive domains will be investigated. To this end, several methods will be employed: analysis of interoceptive accuracy and sensibility (interoceptive tasks and questionnaires), biomarkers of oxytocin (peripheral, endogenous oxytocin), genetic oxytocin markers (such as allele-frequency in the oxytonergic receptor gene), epigenetics (methylation rates of genes related to oxytocin), neuroactivity (EEG).
