Comparing the Effects of Amiodarone, Sotalol, and Placebo in Maintaining Sinus Rhythm in Patients...

Atrial FibrillationCerebrovascular Accident2 more

Atrial fibrillation is the most frequently occurring cardiac arrhythmia, with 1.0-1.5 million cases annually. It is a risk factor for congestive heart failure, and stroke, 75,000 cases of the latter occurring annually in patients with atrial fibrillation. The safety of the most widely used antiarrhythmic agent for this group of patients, quinidine, has been called into question. This study seeks to determine whether two other agents, amiodarone and sotalol, are safe and effective treatments for patients with atrial fibrillation.

Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Community Trial

ArrhythmiaHeart Arrest6 more

To measure survival to hospital discharge of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in community units (e.g., apartment or office buildings, gated communities, sports venues, senior centers, shopping malls) served by trained non-medical responders using automated external defibrillators (AEDs), an approach called Public Access Defibrillation, compared to units receiving the traditional optimum community standard of care (i.e., rescuers trained to recognize a cardiac emergency, call 911, and initiate CPR).

Multicenter Unsustained Tachycardia Trial (MUSTT)

ArrhythmiaCardiovascular Diseases8 more

To determine the value of electrophysiologic (EP)-guided antiarrhythmic therapy in coronary heart disease patients at increased risk for sudden death. The study included a controlled clinical trial and a registry.

Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillators (AVID)

ArrhythmiaCardiovascular Diseases7 more

To evaluate if use of an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) results in reduction in total mortality, when compared with conventional pharmacological therapy, in patients resuscitated from sudden cardiac death who are otherwise at very high risk of mortality from arrhythmic causes.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Patch Trial

ArrhythmiaCardiovascular Diseases8 more

To test the hypothesis that implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy will improve survival in coronary heart disease patients at high risk of death, especially arrhythmic death.

ASSURE WCD Clinical Evaluation - Conversion Efficacy Study

A multicenter single arm open label evaluation of the ASSURE Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD) defibrillation waveform in adult cardiac patients

Automatic External Defibrillation Monitoring in Cardiac Arrest

DeathSudden4 more

We propose to randomize automatic external cardioverter/defibrillators (AECD) in patients who are at high risk for life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and are admitted to the telemetry ward, all other treatments being constant including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We hypothesize that the automatic, rapid, accurate and specific diagnostic and therapeutic technology used in AECDs will further increase the rate of survival in patients with cardiac arrest through rapid and automatic defibrillation, independent of operator initiation, as compared to standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation initiated by healthcare providers.

The Effects of Enzymes and Flavonoids on Inflammation and Coagulation After Marathon

InflammationDeath10 more

The aim of the present study is to investigate changes in inflammatory status and incidence of infection after extreme aerobic physical stress (participation in a marathon). In addition, the impact of marathon running on the hemostasis and muscular state will be evaluated. Changes at the inflammatory, muscular, and rheological level will be related to ingestion of oral hydrolytic enzymes and bioflavonoids.

Vest Prevention of Early Sudden Death Trial and VEST Registry

Myocardial InfarctionVentricular Dysfunction3 more

This study explores the hypothesis that wearable defibrillators can impact mortality by reducing sudden death during the first three months after a heart attack in persons with high risk for life-threatening arrhythmias.

ECPR for Refractory Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac ArrestHeart Arrest9 more

In the U.S. alone, over 300,000 people per year have sudden out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), and less than 1 out of 10 survive. The current standard practice for treating OHCA is to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) at the scene until either the heart is restarted or resuscitation efforts are considered hopeless and discontinued. An alternative strategy for those with refractory OHCA is expedited transport with ongoing mechanical CPR to an Emergency Department capable of performing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). The purpose of study is to test if this strategy is feasible and beneficial.
