General Versus Regional Anesthesia and Postoperative Sleep Quality
AnesthesiaSurgery7 moreMajor surgery can lead to postoperative disturbances in sleep patterns with subjective deterioration of sleep quality according to patients' reports as well as objective alterations of sleep architecture, as recorded by polysomnography Factors implicated in postoperative sleep disturbances include but are not limited to the severity of the surgical procedure, the neuroendocrine response to surgery, inadequate treatment of postoperative pain and external factors interfering with sleep, such as light, noise and therapeutic procedures There are no adequate data from current literature as to whether regional anesthesia is superior to general anesthesia regarding postoperative sleep quality in patients subjected to either mode of anesthesia. So, the aim of this study will be to assess the effect of two different anesthetic techniques (general versus regional) in patients subjected to similar operations Patients will be assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire (PSQI), regarding preoperative and long term postoperative sleep quality and sleep diaries regarding early postoperative sleep quality
Experimental Manipulation of Sleep and Circadian Rhythms and the Role Played on Reward Function...
Delayed Sleep Phase SyndromeAdolescence is a time of heightened reward sensitivity and greater impulsivity. On top of this, many teenagers experience chronic sleep deprivation and misalignment of their circadian rhythms due to biological shifts in their sleep/wake patterns paired with early school start times. Many studies find that this increases the risk for substance use (SU). However, what impact circadian rhythm and sleep disruption either together or independently have on the neuronal circuitry that controls reward and cognition, or if there are interventions that might help to modify these disruptions is unknown. Project 2 (P2) of the CARRS center will test an innovative and mechanistic model of brain circuitry that uses multi-method approaches, takes a developmental perspective, and incorporates key sleep and reward constructs.
Effects of Chronobiology-guided Lifestyle Interventions on Insomnia Severity, Cognitive Performance,...
Circadian Rhythm Sleep DisorderPoor sleep is closely related to circadian misalignment; shift workers often experience shift work disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness and recurrent shift work schedules-associated insomnia. This study aims to examine the effects of a program of chronobiology-guided lifestyle interventions (CGLI) on insomnia severity, cognitive performance (psychomotor vigilance and processing speed), and sleepiness in female nurses undertaking rotating-shift work.
Feasibility Study on the Use of Redormin®500 on Day-time Cognition
Sleep DisordersCircadian Rhythm1 moreRandomized, double-blind, parallel groups, placebo-controlled, baseline/run-in period of 21 days followed by trial period of 21 days, digital phenotyping (sleep, cognitive/psychological parameters and HRV). The aim of this study is to determine the feasibility of investigating the effects of Redormin® 500 on day-time cognition and to assess psychological parameters (subjective cognitive performance, tiredness, mood, stress level, quality of life, motivation), in people with occasional sleep problems. Sleep tracking data will be collected using consumer devices of the Charge series by Fitbit.
WEsleep Trial: Improving Sleep in Hospitalized Patients
SleepSleep Disturbance5 moreIn the WEsleep study, the investigators will perform a cluster randomized controlled trial. 3 surgical and 3 medical departments will be randomized to implement low-cost and simple interventions aimed at improving sleep in admitted patients. Another 3 surgical and 3 medical departments will be randomized to function as control groups. Subjective sleep quality and sleep-wake timing will be assessed in adult medical and surgical patients admitted into one of 12 participating wards, using questionnaires and a sleep diary. In addition, in a subset of participants, objective sleep measures will be assessed in with an EEG headband and a sleep mat.
The Effectiveness of Using Low-level Light Therapy to Treat Sleep and Psychological Symptoms Among...
Shift Work Type Circadian Rhythm Sleep DisorderThe purpose of this study is to explore the treatment of Low Level Light Therapy(LLLT) mitigate possible insomnia and psychological symptoms, when nurses have taken shifts. The investigators hope that the goal of this interventional research is to improve sleep quality and psychological symptoms of shift nurses in order to promote health.
Changes in Circadian Rhythm After Anaesthesia in Children
Circadian Rhythm Sleep DisorderCircadian Rhythm Disorder Caused by Drug8 moreIn this study the investigators will examine the effect of general anesthesia and surgery on sleep duration and sleep quality in children, using questionnaires and a sleep diary.
Reestablishing Sleep and Circadian Alignment in MICU Patients Via a Mechanistic RCT of an Sleep...
Critical IllnessSleep Deprivation2 moreMore than 5 million patients are admitted to the intensive care unit every year in the United States; most of these patients experience profound sleep and circadian disruption. Promotion of circadian alignment (i.e., alignment of the body's clocks) would make it possible to strategically schedule behaviors such as sleep and eating at normal body clock times, which is predicted to improve sleep quality and metabolic function. This project will test the ability of a sleep chronobundle (i.e., sleep promotion and circadian treatment bundle) to normalize circadian alignment and subsequently test if this realignment also improves sleep and metabolism.
Biomarkers for Circadian Timing in Healthy Adults
Sleep Wake DisordersSleep Disorders13 moreStudy investigators want to learn more about the underlying biological clock and to see if the timing of that clock can be estimated from a single blood sample.
Effect of Owning a Service Dog on Military Veterans With PTSD
Physiological ResponsesSleep Disorders3 moreThe study aims to investigate the effects of a service dog on military veterans with post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). The investigators will use non-invasive measures of the physiological responses, data obtained via dairy keeping, accelerometer data estimating activity and sleep patterns, and baseline information including psychological measures validated for this specific population.
