Viamigo for People With Dementia and Their Informal Caregivers
DementiaThe main objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of the Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mobile application 'Viamigo' among people with dementia living in the community and their informal caregivers. Viamigo aims to support the independent out-of-home mobility of the user and to reduce informal caregiver's burden by teaching users a known individual route, which they can accomplish independently while being monitored by an informal caregiver. Although Viamigo was initially developed for persons with intellectual disabilities, it is expected that it can also support and improve out-of-home mobility and thereby the social participation of people with dementia. The design of the study is a mixed methods single-arm pre-post design with a baseline assessment, a 3-month intervention period, and a post-intervention assessment. Dyads (n=24) of people with mild to moderate dementia living in the community and their informal caregivers will use the mobile application for 3 months. The main study parameter is the feasibility of the Viamigo intervention for people with dementia and their informal caregivers. Secondary study parameters for people with dementia include out-of-home mobility and social participation. Secondary study parameters for informal caregivers include quality of life, caregiver burden, and gains in dementia caregiving.

Tango for Older People With Dementia
Old Age; DementiaCognitive impairment (CI) is the leading cause of loss of autonomy and has a huge impact on physical performance and quality of life (QOL) in older people. Pharmacological treatments currently available have modest efficacy at best. Dance as both artistic and physical activity, combining emotions, social interaction, and sensory stimulation, therefore appears as a non-pharmacological intervention, which could contribute to the prevention of functional decline. Among all the existing dances, tango occupies a special place because of the cultural and emotional resonance it carries, but also because of what it leads to motor mobilization (variations in the rhythm of walking, rotation of the belts, weight transfers…). These characteristics seem to make the tango an excellent tool for the rehabilitation of balance and gait, as well as for the prevention of the loss of autonomy in older adults with CI. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of an intervention based on tango and classical physical activity.
The Swedish BioFINDER 2 Study
DementiaAlzheimer Disease10 moreThe Swedish BioFINDER 2 study is a new study that will launch in 2017 and extends the previous cohorts of BioFINDER 1 study (www.biofinder.se). BioFINDER 1 is used e.g. to characterize the role of beta-amyloid pathology in early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) using amyloid-PET (18F-Flutemetamol) and Aβ analysis in cerebrospinal fluid samples. The BioFINDER 1 study has resulted in more than 40 publications during the last three years, many in high impact journals, and some the of the results have already had important implications for the diagnostic work-up patients with AD in the clinical routine practice. The original BioFINDER 1 cohort started to include participants in 2008. Since then there has been a rapid development of biochemical and neuroimaging technologies which enable novel ways to the study biological processes involved in Alzheimer's disease in living people. There has also been a growing interest in the earliest stages of AD and other neurodegenerative diseases. With the advent of new tau-PET tracers there is now an opportunity to elucidate the role of tau pathology in the pathogenesis of AD and other tauopathies. The Swedish BioFINDER 2 study has been designed to complement the BioFINDER 1 study and to e.g. address issues regarding the role of tau pathology in different dementias and in preclinical stages of different dementia diseases. Further, the clinical assessments and MRI methods have been further optimized compared to BioFINDER 1.
