Training Balance Control in Children With Cerebral Palsy Using Virtual Reality Games
Cerebral PalsySpasticIn this study the clinical relevance of the use of commercially available virtual reality games in the rehabilitation of balance will be assessed in children with cerebral palsy. It will be investigated how different commercially available platforms (i.e. Xbox One + Kinect and Nintendo Wii + balance board) will affect the compensations of children with cerebral palsy to preserve their balance. The effect of 1 training session will be assessed as well as the effect of a long-term training of 8 weeks.

Cerebral PalsyChildren with cerebral palsy (CP) have life-long motor disorders caused by brain injuries which occur around birth. These children go through extensive treatment during childhood, but the treatment has generally been started late due to late diagnosis (median age 15 months). New recommendations state that the clinical diagnosis "high risk of CP" should be given before 6 months corrected age, in order to be able to intervene as early as possible, and have the best possibilities to prevent or limit the adverse neurodevelopmental consequences of brain injuries occurring around birth. Thus, there is a great need to develop evidence-based early interventions for children at high risk of developing cerebral palsy. The Small Step program is developed at Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Stockholm, Sweden and is based upon theories of brain plasticity induced by early learning. The efficacy of the program is presently being investigated at KI. Preliminary results indicate a large individual variation in response to the program among the participating children. The aim of the present study is therefore to explore individual responses to the Small Step Program in infants at risk of developing cerebral palsy. The main hypothesis is that infant characteristics, such as severity of brain pathology, are associated with differential response to the program. Also, infants with absent fidgety movements and children with sporadic fidgety movements are believed to respond differently to the program.

Cerebral PalsyThe purpose of this study is to compare a motor learning (ML)-based gait-related training intervention to a functional lower limb strength training intervention, with a concurrent evaluation of functional, neural and participation outcomes for children and youth with Cerebral Palsy (CP). This study is a two-group, parallel arm RCT in which twenty-two children with CP in GMFCS Levels I-II will be randomly allocated to a 6-week, 16 session program of: (i) ML based gait training or (ii) lower limb strength training. Outcome assessments occur pre/post/4-months post-intervention.

Cerebral Palsy InfantilePurpose: The aim of the study is to determine the combined effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and activities in virtual reality on the functional recovery of the upper extremity function of the children with hemiparesis. Subjects: Forty children with infantile stroke with age group between (6-12 years) will be divided into two groups, the experimental group will receive tDCS plus VR while the control group will receive sham tDCS plus VR. All the children will receive tDCS for 30minutes with 1.5 mA intensity over the dominant motor cortex. Both groups will be treated for three times a week for 6 weeks. Instrumentation: The the Fugl-Meyer assessment, motricity index, and Modified Barthel index will be used to assess the dependent variables after the intervention.

Cerebral PalsyWhole Body Vibration2 moreThe aim of this study was to investigate short and long-term effects of Whole Body Vibration therapy on spasticity and motor performance in children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy in addition to conventional physiotherapy. Twenty-six patients undergoing conventional physiotherapy in a private rehabilitation center were included in the study. Patients were randomized to treatment and control groups. Study was completed with a total of 22 cases (11 for each group). At the beginning of the study, cases were evaluated with Gross Motor Function Measure-88, LEGSys Spatio-Temporal Gait Analyzer, SportKAT550tm Portable Computerized Kinesthetic Balance Device and Modified Ashworth Scale. Cases in the treatment group were treated with Compex-Winplate for 8 weeks, 3 times a week, 15 minutes a day in one session. All cases were reevaluated immediately after the treatment and 12 weeks after the treatment.

Cerebral PalsyThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of training with Virtual Reality in the movement range of children with Cerebral Palsy spastic hemiparetic.The study protocol consisted of two days of training and 1 revaluation. The training A (Nintendo Wii®) and B (standard protocol) were randomized the children in AB and BA sequences, with one week interval. Immediately kinematics pre and post-training was held and after a week no significant changes were observed for the angular variables and space-time between groups. The Virtual Reality used for intervention to improve upper arm function in children with Cerebral Palsy is still a relatively new method.
