Colorado Women's TC Project
Substance-Related DisordersThe major aim of the project is to document and evaluate two treatments for female offenders with substance abuse problems (TC and cognitive behavioral), simultaneously studying the process of treatment, and relating treatment process to treatment outcome.

Re-Entry MTC for Offenders With MICA Disorders
Mental DisordersSubstance-Related DisordersThe purpose of this study is to examine the transition of offenders with both mental illness and chemical abuse (MICA) disorders from prison to the community, where continued treatment is generally considered necessary to sustain gains made by prison treatment, and to achieve successful outcomes. The project will determine the effectiveness of a modified therapeutic community (Re-Entry MTC) approach as compared to the case management and parole supervision currently provided. The study will also assess the relative impact on treatment outcomes of the type of treatment received while in prison and of the progress achieved in re-entry treatment.

Treatment of Comorbid Depression and Substance Abuse in Young People
DepressionSubstance-Related DisordersThis study aims to treat young people with an adjunctive integrated cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention and to examine the acceptability of this treatment approach within this population. The study will also include a pilot placebo-controlled trial of sertraline for those young people who fail to or only partially respond to the CBT intervention, so as to determine whether adjunctive anti-depressant treatment improves clinical response in this population.

Home Based Treatment for Drug Use in Early Adolescents
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderOppositional Defiant Disorder2 moreThis study will compare two programs to see if they are helpful in preventing the use of substances in adolescents with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), or conduct disorder (CD). One of the programs involves working with adolescents and their parent(s) in their home. The other program involves working with adolescents and their parent(s) in an office setting.

Prescription Opioid Addiction Treatment Study (POATS)
Opiate DependenceSubstance-related Disorders1 moreThe purpose of this study is to determine whether treatment outcome for subjects dependent on prescription opioid analgesics can be improved by adding individual drug counseling to the prescription of buprenorphine/naloxone with standard medical management. This will be examined during: a) an initial four-week treatment with taper; b) a 12-week stabilization treatment for those who do not respond successfully to the initial treatment; and c) a long-term follow-up assessment at 1.5 years, 2.5 years, and 3.5 years after treatment.

Brief Intervention for Drug Abusing Adolescents
Drug AbuseThe purpose of this clinical trail is to evaluate the efficacy of a brief, cognitive-behavioral therapeutic intervention for adolescents reporting mild or moderate drug abuse (MMDA). This school-based initiative employs a collaborative effort between the University of Minnesota researchers and the St. Paul Public Schools. This intervention aims to reduce post-treatment drug use behaviors and enhance drug-use resistant cognitions and problem-solving skills.

Abilify Therapy for Reducing Comorbid Substance Abuse
SchizophreniaSchizoaffective Disorder4 moreIt is hypothesized that the use of aripiprazole (Abilify) in patients with alcohol and/or drug dependence with comorbid psychiatric conditions will lead to: Reduction in the amount of alcohol and/or drugs used as measured by the Time Line Follow Back (TLFB) and the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) Reduction in cravings for alcohol and drugs as measured by the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale Reduction in symptoms of co-morbid psychiatric disorders compared to before starting aripiprazole.

Family Intervention for Mental Illness and Substance Abuse
SchizophreniaBipolar Disorder1 moreThis study will evaluate a family intervention program for individuals with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or schizoaffective disorder and co-occurring substance use disorders.

Buprenorphine and Naloxone for the Treatment of Opiate Dependence - 1
Heroin DependenceSubstance-Related DisordersThe purpose of this study is the use of buprenorphine/naloxone in treatment of opioid dependence.
