Exploring the Comorbidity Between Mental Disorders and General Medical Conditions

OrganicIncluding Symptomatic42 more

Mental disorders have been shown to be associated with a number of general medical conditions (also referred to as somatic or physical conditions). The investigators aim to undertake a comprehensive study of comorbidity among those with treated mental disorders, by using high-quality Danish registers to provide age- and sex-specific pairwise estimates between the ten groups of mental disorders and nine groups of general medical conditions. The investigators will examine the association between all 90 possible pairs of prior mental disorders and later GMC categories using the Danish national registers. Depending on whether individuals are diagnosed with a specific mental disorder, the investigators will estimate the risk of receiving a later diagnosis within a specific GMC category, between the start of follow-up (January 1, 2000) or at the earliest age at which a person might develop the mental disorder, whichever comes later. Follow-up will be terminated at onset of the GMC, death, emigration from Denmark, or December 31, 2016, whichever came first. Additionally for dyslipidemia, follow-up will be ended if a diagnosis of ischemic heart disease was received. A "wash-out" period will be employed in the five years before follow-up started (1995-1999), to identify and exclude prevalent cases from the analysis. Individuals with the GMC of interest before the observation period will be considered prevalent cases and excluded from the analyses (i.e. prevalent cases were "washed-out"). When estimating the risk of a specific GMC, the investigators will consider all individuals to be exposed or unexposed to the each mental disorder depending on whether a diagnosis is received before the end of follow-up. Persons will be considered unexposed to a mental disorder until the date of the first diagnosis, and exposed thereafter.

Characterization of Dyslipidemia in Adolescent Obesity

Obesity

The primary objective of this pilot study is to characterize the profile of lipoprotein, inflammatory, and metabolic markers of cardiovascular disease in obese adolescents as compared to normal-weight age-matched controls.

Africa and Middle East Cardiovascular Epidemiological Study

ObesitySmoking3 more

This is a cross-sectional, epidemiological study to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, smoking, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and hypertension in patients attending General Practice clinics in the Africa and Middle East region. A total of 4300 patients will be evaluated. In patients who are found to have previously been diagnosed with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors such as dyslipidemia or hypertension, the level of control of their respective conditions will also be evaluated.

Association of Genes to Resistance to Weight Loss in Obese Patients

ObesityMetabolic Syndrome1 more

The overall goal of this study is to determine whether variations in the perilipin, and several other, genes would be a useful tool for physicians who are caring for morbidly obese patients to guide therapy. The main hypotheses to be tested is that sequence variations (polymorphisms) in the perilipin gene and several other obesity-related genes are associated with resistance to weight loss for obese individuals on energy restricted diets, potentially playing a role in the development of obesity related complications.

Lipoprotein Metabolism in Normal Volunteers and Patients With High Levels of Lipoproteins

HypolipoproteinemiaHypercholesterolemia2 more

Researchers plan to study the fat-rich particles, called lipoproteins, which circulate in the blood. This study is designed to improve understanding of normal, as well as abnormal, lipoprotein metabolism and the role it plays in the development of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Patients participating in this study will receive injections of lipoproteins or apolipoproteins (the protein component of lipoproteins) that have been isolated and purified. These lipoproteins will be labeled with small amounts of radioactive material and sterilized before they are injected into the patient. Patients participating in the study will be required to have blood samples taken, and provide urine samples throughout the course of the study. In addition, patient will be required to follow a specially formulated diet. Patients will be weighed throughout the course of the study....

Use of Nutraceuticals in Clinical Practice

DyslipidemiasDiabetes Mellitus2 more

The aim of this study will be to evaluate the use of the nutraceutical with cardio-metabolic actions in clinical practice in addition to a Mediterranean diet scheme, normally recommended in the clinic. In particular the study will analyze how much the nutraceutical is prescribed and what are the purposes for which it is used and at what dosages.

Atorvastatin Study in Cardiovascular Disease Risk

HypercholesterolemiaDyslipidemia

Treatment of hypercholesterolemia is based on the guidelines of ESC-EAS 2011 (European Heart Journal (2011) 32, 1769-1818, ESC / EAS Guidelines for the management of dyslipidaemias) These calculate the 10 year risk based on SCORE tables - Systematic COronary Risk Estimation and taking into account specific parameters in the patient's profile.
