Predictors of Response in Chronic Stroke
StrokeBrain Diseases3 moreThis study will validate a predictive model that uses demographics, functional status, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and other potential biomarkers to predict the likelihood of a clinically significant change in impairment at the end of a robot assisted therapy intervention. The study will include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and an arm exercise program consisting of robot-assisted exercise combined with functional arm exercise called transition to task training (TTT).
S. Endotoxin, Inflammatory Mediators and MRS Before and After Treatment in MHE
Hepatic EncephalopathyThe purpose of this study is to examine S.endotoxins , inflammatory mediators and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) before and after treatment in patients of cirrhosis and minimal hepatic encephalopathy.
Stroke Telemedicine for Arizona Rural Residents Trial
StrokeCerebral Infarction5 moreThe STARR network registry consists of a 4 spoke 1 hub system. Which will consist of prospective collection, recording, and regular analysis of telestroke patient consultation and care data for the purpose of quality measure assessment and improvement and benchmarking against other national and international telestroke programs.
Speech in Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE)
Hepatic EncephalopathyThis is an observational study that will test the clinical significance of speech features in patients with cirrhosis. It aims to assess if speech is associated with cognitive function at baseline, if speech predicts changes in cognition, and if speech predicts future events of hepatic encephalopathy (cirrhosis-related confusion), as well as to assess the dynamics of speech over time, especially with episodes of overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) and treatment interventions.
iPod Games in Hepatic Encephalopathy
Hepatic EncephalopathyCirrhosisTo see if using ipod games can improve mental functioning
Rifaximin in Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy
Hepatic EncephalopathyThe purpose of this study is to determine whether alteration of gut flora with rifaximin can lead to improvement in driving performance, psychometric test performance, and quality of life in patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) and cirrhosis in a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial.
CoolCap Trial, Treatment of Perinatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy
Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)This is a research study of head cooling. Its goal is to determine whether cooling babies' heads can reduce or prevent brain damage that may have resulted from temporarily reduced oxygen supply to the brain. In this study, half of the babies (selected at random) will have a special cooling cap with circulating water placed on their head for 72 hours to lower the temperature of their brain. The rest of the baby's body will be maintained at a defined temperature by a standard overhead radiant heater. The study protocol includes the taking and analysis of blood samples, performance of brain wave tests, imaging of the brain by ultrasound, and other tests as clinically indicated. Neurodevelopmental outcome will also be assessed at 18 months of age.
Long-term Telerehabilitation for Patients With Stroke
StrokeCerebrovascular Disorders4 moreThe aim of the current protocol is to study 40 patients, each for 12 weeks, to address hypotheses related to the ability of a telerehabilitation system to (a) improve motor status and disability, (b) collect various forms of patient data from the home, (c) improve risk factor knowledge and control, and (d) assess patient compliance with home-based telerehabilitation. Patients who have returned to their home after stroke will be provided with a telehealth system and be asked to use it 6 days/week for 12 weeks, during which time subjects will use this system for daily rehabilitation therapy, assessments, and education--all on one platform.
Feasibility of an App-based Nutrition & Exercise Program in Cirrhosis
CirrhosisLiver1 moreThe personalized nutrition and exercise app was designed for use by individuals living with chronic conditions. The pilot study examines the acceptance and use of the online, interactive program to support self-management in cirrhosis.
The BRAINFOOD Trial to Prevent Recurrent Hepatic Encephalopathy.
CirrhosisAscites4 moreThis study is being completed for patients with cirrhosis, including patients with a prior history of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of medically-tailored meals as an intervention. Patients will be enrolled from the University of Michigan and will complete the baseline assessments in-person or remotely. In addition participants will complete study related materials before, during and after treatment with medically-tailored meals (MTM). After completing the study meals, participants will return for follow-up or have this visit completed remotely as well as have an observational period for 12 more weeks.
