Effects of Rasagiline on Sleep Disturbances in Parkinson's Disease

Sleep DisturbancesParkinsons's Disease

As the MAO-B inhibitor rasagiline is able to improve motor skills it might have positive effects on sleep disruption by reducing nocturnal akinesia. As it was reported to cause only minor sleep disruption in PD Patients, it might be able to improve sleep architecture. The investigators thus study the effects of Rasagiline on sleep disturbances measured by polysomnographic (PSG) evaluation of sleep efficacy and PDSS-2. Secondary measures are other sleep variables measured by PSG, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness assessed by standardized scales as well as cognitive function, depression and QoL index.

Pilates and Dance to Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Treatment

Breast CancerQuality of Life14 more

Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Brazil, and its treatment, namely surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone therapy, has consequences and side effects that significantly affect the quality of life and associated physical and psychological factors. The practice of physical activity, in turn, may play a beneficial role in these factors, and help the recovery of the patient in relation to the consequences of the treatments. Two types of physical activity can be addressed in the context of breast cancer; Dance and the Pilates method. Thus, the objective of the present study will be to analyze the impact of Pilates practice and dance on quality of life and on psychological and physical factors in patients undergoing adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. Patients older than 18 years who are in adjuvant treatment, namely, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and / or hormone therapy at the Oncology Research Center - CEPON, will be invited to be part of the study. With a randomized clinical trial of three arms, the patients will be submitted to 16 weeks of intervention, and randomized in 3 groups: (A) belly dance protocol group; (B) Pilates method protocol group, and (C) control group who will continue with their routine activities. Sample randomization will be conducted in confidence by one of the researchers in a specific computer program. Information about personal and clinical characteristics, quality of life, psychological factors (depressive symptoms, body image, self-esteem, optimism, perceived stress, fatigue, pain, sexual function and sleep quality) and physical factors (cardiorespiratory fitness, balance , Posture, upper limb functionality and presence of lymphedema). All information will be collected before and after the intervention period. Statistical analysis will use the statistical package SPSS - IBM, version 20.0. Firstly, descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and percentage) will be used in order to know the data, and then the Anova two way test with repeated measurements and Sydak Comparison Test, in order to analyze the data. Groups of the Pilates method, of the dance and control group. Significance level of 5%.

Better Sleep in Psychiatric Care - ADHD.

Sleep ProblemADHD

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is treatment of choice for insomnia (CBT-i). Many patients in psychiatric care have sleep problems including insomnia, but are rarely given the choice to participate in CBT to improve their sleep. Patients with ADHD is a patient group with high levels of sleep difficulties. Sleep problems in this patient group can be both more general such as insomnia, but can also be related to the ADHD itself and to the use of ADHD medication. In a previous pilot study, the investigators developed a version of CBT-i that would target sleep problems in this population. The basis was CBT-i, but with more emphasis on sleep promoting behaviors specific to ADHD (e.g. appropriate timing of ADHD-medication), techniques that would also alleviate sleep phase problems, (e.g. the systematic use of light and darkness), and techniques to target more general sleep disturbing habits (e.g. not winding down before bed time), that are also common in patients with ADHD. This treatment was well tolerated and gave moderate effects on insomnia severity in the pilot study. In a naturalistic randomized controlled trial, the investigators now evaluate the effects of this psychological treatment on sleep and symptoms of ADHD in patients at the ADHD-clinics, Northern Stockholm Psychiatry, Sweden.

Brief Behavioral Treatment for Sleep Problems in IBS Study

Irritable Bowel SyndromeSleep Disturbance

Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) often report more fatigue and sleep disturbances compared to their healthy counterparts and compared to patients with other GI disorders. This pilot study will evaluate the feasibility of a Brief Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia (BBT-I) in Irritable Bowel Syndrome. 40 participants will be recruited; 20 will receive 4 weeks of BBT and 20 will be assigned to a wait list control group (WLC). The primary aim of the current project is to assess feasibility of administering BBT-I to a sample of patients with IBS. Because behavioral sleep treatment has not yet been studied in IBS or any other GI population, this project will provide information about treatment adherence, recruitment, and effect sizes. Secondary aims include evaluating the impact of BBT-I on sleep quality and IBS symptom severity.
