Mainz Epilepsy Registry
EpilepsyDissociative Seizures1 moreProspective longitudinal observational registry study of all patients with epilepsy treated in the Mainz Comprehensive Epilepsy and Sleep Medicine Center with the focus on the course of the disease and quality of life.
Implicit Learning in Epileptic Children
EpilepsyEpileptic children suffer from impairments in various learning and memory tasks. Yet, no study investigated implicit learning in epileptic children. Implicit learning is not only underlying motor skills acquisition, but also social and cognitive ones. Because acquisition of new skills is optimal during childhood, the study of implicit learning mechanism in children is of major importance. The present study will be the first to explore implicit learning mechanisms in children with epilepsy. Implicit learning mechanisms can be preserved or altered.
Prevalence of Epilepsy and Sleep Wake Disorders in Alzheimer Disease
Alzheimer DiseaseAlzheimer Dementia2 moreAlzheimer disease is the most common of the neurodegenerative diseases. Epilepsy and sleep wake disorders are co-morbid conditions of Alzheimer disease. The investigators propose a prospective study using long-term EEG monitoring in combination with polysomnography to determine prevalence of epilepsy and sleep wake disorders in Alzheimer disease, and correlate these findings with clinical data, Alzheimer disease biomarkers and imaging studies (MRI and amyloid/tau-PET). In selected patients, the investigators will perform EEG studies with foramen ovale electrodes. The ultimate goal is to improve the outcome of patients with Alzheimer disease by early treatment of epilepsy and restoring sleep-wake disturbances.
Multi-scale Analysis of Physiological Brain Networks
EpilepsyThe SEEG implantation is performed on purely clinical criteria for preoperative diagnosis. Magnetoencephalography and EEG are purely passive techniques that do not involve any additional risk. This project is a continuation of an existing project in which it was demonstrated the feasibility of simultaneous SEEG and MEG/EEG recordings.
Neural Circulatory Control and SUDEP Risk.
EpilepsySeizuresThe investigators believe epilepsy alters the way the body controls blood pressure, heart rate and breathing, and these changes increase the risk of sudden unexpected death in patients with epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP-7 is a risk scoring tool which may correlate with these changes to the heart and blood vessels. This research study measures those differences which may help identify new markers to help predict those patients at greatest risk in the future.
Genetic Markers of Cardiovascular Disease in Epilepsy
EpilepsySeizures3 moreEpilepsy is a common condition which affects over 3 million people in the US. Patients with uncontrolled epilepsy have a lifetime risk of sudden unexpected death (SUDEP) of 35%, which is greatest in those under 40 years of age. The exact mechanisms and causes are not understood but can be due to underlying conditions which affect the heart and brain, which may lead to dangerous heart rhythms and death. Some of these conditions which affect heart and brain have an identifiable genetic cause. This study aims to identify known genetic causes of heart rhythm and sudden death related disorders in patients with epilepsy.
Clinical Phenotype and Omics Study of KCNQ2-related Epilepsy
KCNQ2-related EpilepsyThe aims of study on KCNQ2-related epilepsy: (1) establish phenotype database and sample database of KCNQ2-related epilepsy; (2) to establish genotype-phenotype association of KCNQ2-related epilepsy; (3) to study the brain network of KCNQ2-related epilepsy based on multi-modal brain image and EEG data; (4) to find prognostic biomarkers of KCNQ2-related epilepsy based on omics study.
Assessment of Adults Epidemiological Characteristics of Status Epilepticus in the French West Indies...
Status EpilepticusEpilepsyThe justification of this prospective and multicenter study is based on the absence of published data concerning, status epilepticus (SE), a pathology which seems frequent in the French West Indies (FWI) and French Guiana, and whose etiological and prognostic characteristics are often mentioned or assumed but which remain to be demonstrated. The scientific interest lies both in the knowledge of the epidemiology of this pathology and in the identification of the main etiologies, in particular the underlying brain lesions. The morbidity of SE is significant, associating neurological disorders with impaired consciousness, respiratory, hemodynamic and cardiac rhythm disorders, as well as metabolic disorders such as acidosis. SE-related mortality in the acute phase ranges from 3-40% across studies and regions, while long-term mortality ranges from 17-80% depending on age, cause of SE, comorbidities and the occurrence of complications. The prognosis of this pathology has however improved in recent years in developed countries or countries with a high level of health system. On the other hand, the morbidity and mortality of SE in the French overseas departments is not known, even if these territories are supposed to be at an equivalent level in terms of health system to that of mainland France.
Clinical Outcomes of Pregnant Individuals With Epilepsy - Prospective Study
EpilepsyThe aim of this study is to investigate the pregnancy, delivery, neonatal, and epilepsy outcomes in individuals with epilepsy undergoing pregnancy at the Maternal and Infant Health Programs at the University Health Network - Sinai Health and followed for epilepsy at the Toronto Western Hospital Epilepsy Clinic. In particular, we are interested in the association between following recommended epilepsy management guidelines for pregnant individuals with epilepsy and those aforementioned outcomes.
