Biofeedback and Hydrogen Water as Treatments for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The aim of this 10-week pilot study is to explore the potential benefit of two recently developed non-invasive interventions, heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) and OTC supplement hydrogen water, for the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Symptom measures and heart monitoring information will be generated by this study. Given the lack of effective treatments in this illness, these two non-invasive home-based treatments may help patients feel and function better.

Effects of Probiotics on Gut Microbiota, Endocannabinoid and Immune Activation and Symptoms of Fatigue...

FatigueStress1 more

The aim of the planned research is to assess the dynamics of changes in the elements of the gut-brain axis (GBA), the cytokine profile and the endocannabinoid system markers, after dietary supplementation with probiotics Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell-52 and Bifidobacterium longum Rosell-175 by professional dancers. Although in recent years there has been growing interest in the influence of the gut microbiota on the body's adaptation to stress stimuli and on overall health, there is a lack of information on the influence of probiotics on systems involved in maintaining neuropsychiatric balance, such as the endocannabinoid system. In order to determine the validity of the applied therapy with selective probiotics, the following will be assessed: intestinal bacteria and bacterial metabolites in the stool, cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors and enzymes in the blood, indicators of mental distress in the blood, cytokines responsible for the modulation of the gut-brain axis in the blood, as well as questionnaires regarding the functioning of the digestive tract, fatigue, stress and sleep quality. The study will involve active dancers of the Polish Theater in Poznan, the Polish Dance Theater, the Private School of Dance Art in Poznan and students of the Academy of Physical Education in the field of Dance. Dancers are a group of athletes that is exposed to particular injuries and work-overload. Professional dancers spend multiple hours a week on intensive physical training. The largest percentage of injuries occurring in the group of professional dancers are chronic injuries, including: inflammation of soft tissues, muscle strains and tears. Professional dance is one of the most physically demanding forms of physical activity, and at the same time it is associated with a high burden on the nervous system problems caused by performances in front of an audience or subjective jury, frequent traveling and disturbances in the circadian rhythm.

Effectiveness of Acceptance Commitment Therapy or Micro Breaks in Patients With Chronic Fatigue...

Fatigue SyndromeChronic

Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a distinct disease entity with an estimated prevalence of 0.3-0.7% and more common in women (3:1 ratio). It can be diagnosed according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2015 consensus definition using 3 major criteria and one of 2 minor criteria. Diagnosis requires that the patient have the following three symptoms: A substantial reduction or impairment in the ability to engage in pre-illness levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities that persists for more than 6 months and is accompanied by fatigue, which is often profound, is of new or definite onset (not lifelong), is not the result of ongoing excessive exertion, and is not substantially alleviated by rest, Post-exertional malaise,* and Unrefreshing sleep* At least one of the two following manifestations is also required: Cognitive impairment* or Orthostatic intolerance Note* Frequency and severity of symptoms should be assessed. The diagnosis of ME/CFS should be questioned if patients do not have these symptoms at least half of the time with moderate, substantial, or severe intensity. Currently, individually tailored therapy with emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy and graduated activity therapy is considered the therapy of first choice, although their effectiveness has been critically questioned in recent years. There are often frustrating treatment courses, a larger proportion of partial remissions, a significantly smaller proportion of full remissions and return to work. The study aims to evaluate patients of the outpatient service for chronic fatigue at the Department of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine, University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, in the context of a group therapy for the treatment of CFS/ME in respect to the response to different, non-drug based therapeutic procedures and to gain knowledge about the effects of the therapy. The study is a clinical comparative study of therapeutic procedures/interventions without the use of drugs or a medical product. The interventions are Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Micro Breaks in Everyday Life (MBEL) adapted to CFS/ME. The collection of biological samples (saliva, blood) and health-related personal data (actigraphy, psychometric data from questionnaires) is associated with minimal risks and burdens.

Does Cardiorespiratory Interval Training Improve Post-stroke Fatigue

StrokeFatigue

Post-stroke fatigue is common and negatively influences post-stroke recovery. Today, there is insufficient evidence how to treatment post-stroke fatigue. Our objective is to investigate if a structured cardiorespiratory interval training program added to the early supported discharge (ESD)-service results in relieved post-stroke fatigue and increased oxygen uptake. This is a 1:1 prospective randomized open- label trial(Two-centre study) with blinded evaluators (PROBE-design) of 50 participants referred to ESD with study start at 4 (±1) weeks after discharge from the stroke unit. The intervention group (N=25) receives a structured cardiorespiratory interval training program on ergometer cycle, 30-40 minutes, 3 days a week for 8 weeks. The cardiorespiratory interval training program comprises of 4x4 minute interval, at 70 to 80% of peak heart rate, interrupted by 3 minutes active recovery. The control group (N=25) receives usual ESD care. The primary outcome will be a shift in the Swedish Fatigue Assessment Scale before intervention (baseline) versus 8 weeks months after start of intervention in the intervention and control groups. Secondary outcomes include cardiorespiratory fitness, compliance, adherence and adverse events.

Effects of a Personalized Physical Training to Reduce Fatigue

Fatigue SyndromeChronic

Chronic fatigue (CF) is a pathological fatigue over at least 6 months, without improvement after rest or sleep. In primary care, it is the major complaint in 5 to 10% of the consultations. Physical activity is an efficient therapy to help reducing this fatigue in addition to the improvement of muscular and cardiorespiratory functions. However, it remains little exploited. Yet the studies focus mainly on precise chronic pathologies with general trainings, without considering the fatigue status and reveal a large heterogeneity. Personalizing the physical training appears to be the next step in order to improve chronic fatigue patients care. The objective of this study will be to investigate the relevance and the effects of a personalized physical training to reduce fatigue in chronic fatigue patients.

Immunoadsorption in Patients With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Including Patients With Post-COVID-19...

ME/CFSPost-COVID ME/CFS

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the effectiveness of repeated immunoadsorption intervention in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) including patients with post-acute COVID-19 CFS (PACS-CFS). The main questions it aims to answer are: (1) Does repeated immunoadsorption relieve fatigue and/or other symptoms associated with CFS and PACS-CFS? (2) Is repeated immunoadsorption safe and tolerable in this patient population? What are the side effects of repeated immunoadsorption, and how common are they? Participants will be asked to participate for approx. 32 weeks (8 months). After screening, participants will receive assigned intervention of either five immunoadsorption treatments (with Ig adsorber) every other day over 10 days or matching sham treatments (without Ig adsorber), followed by a 6-month follow-up period with three ambulatory visits. Every participant will undergo trial outcome, safety, and monitoring assessments. The results of this study will provide information on whether repeated immunoadsorption can alleviate symptoms associated with CFS and PACS-CFS, as well as insights into the pathophysiological processes in this condition, which in turn can help to develop new and effective therapies.
