Benefit of Assistive Listening Device for Lateralization

Hearing LossSensorineural

Speech intelligibility in noise will be evaluated in adults with moderate to moderate-severe sensorineural hearing loss using a Phonak Roger microphone and hearing aid with compatible Phonak Roger receiver. Target speech will be presented from multiple directions while competing diffuse background noise is presented simultaneously. Participants will repeat back words and percent correct is calculated.

An intervention group and a control group will complete a battery of questionnaires at four time points to investigate the impact of first-ever hearing aid fitting on fatigue and associated variables. The study is observational as all participants in the intervention group will already be receiving their first-ever hearing aid as part of their routine audiological care.

At an early stage, feasibility studies are conducted to investigate new algorithms, features and functions in an isolated manner. If the benefit is proven, their performance is then investigated regarding interdependency between all available algorithms, features and functions running in parallel in a hearing aid (pivotal/pre-validation studies) and, resulting from the pre-validation studies, they get optimized. Prior to product launch, the Phonak Hearing Systems get reviewed by a final quality control in terms of clinical trials. This is a validation study, investigating improved algorithms, features, functions and wearing comfort. This will be a clinical investigation which will be conducted mono centric at Sonova AG Headquarters based in Stäfa (Switzerland).

A personal sound amplifying device (PASP) like Teo First is a wearable electronic product that is not intended to compensate for impaired hearing, but rather is intended for non-hearing impaired consumers to amplify sounds in the environment for a number of reasons, such as for recreational activities. Nevertheless, a lot of mild and moderate impaired hearing people don't want to buy and wear all day a real hearing aid. The goal of our study is to evaluate the benefit of such a device for mild and moderate presbycusis patient 60 years of age and older, with no previous hearing aid.

This study will be conducted as three concurrent projects designed to develop an efficient clinical technique to quantify tinnitus perception: (1)Laboratory development of the automated technique for comprehensive tinnitus quantification;(2)Development of a technique to test for tinnitus "malingering"; and (3)Evaluation of the automated technique in the clinical environment.

Hearing Loss

Hearing aids are commonly used to help people with hearing loss hear better in daily listening environments. MDHearing Smart hearing aids are designed to use the MDHearing app to adjust hearing aids to each individual's hearing loss. This study intends to show whether the MDHearing Smart hearing aids can be fitted by each user reliably and if each user can use the MDHearing app on their smartphone or tablet to make adjustments to achieve good aided benefit, which will be compared to those fitted by audiology professionals. This study includes three components: human factor study, self-fit study, and professional-fit study. The information obtained will be useful for both audiology professionals and people with impaired hearing.

One in six people in the United Kingdom and over 400 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss. This figure will double by 2050 as predicted by the World Health Organisation. There is an urgent need to improve our knowledge regarding hearing loss, its underlying mechanisms, optimal diagnostic modalities, reliable and accurate functional and imaging biomarkers. A less-well studied condition associated with progressive hearing loss is infratentorial superficial siderosis (iSS). It results from iron deposition along the surfaces of brain structures which control hearing and balance. It is currently considered uncommon, but may well be under-recognised and therefore under-reported. Despite its severity, our current understanding of its impact on the hearing (auditory) and balance (vestibular) functions is limited, and this has an adverse impact on the treatment offered to these patients. Additionally, iSS patients have been reported to have cognitive impairment yet literature reports of cognitive assessment in iSS are few. The cognitive dysfunction may be specific to iSS or due to progressive hearing impairment or a combination of both, and further studies are required to establish this. Olfaction is also known to be affected in patients with iSS yet is rarely reported in the literature. Due to the significant morbidity and progressive nature, there is a clear need to improve our understanding of the audiovestibular dysfunction resulting from iSS. The aim of this study is to comprehensively assess audiovestibular function in iSS compared to age-related hearing loss and the controls/normative data and as a means to quantify deficits for monitoring disease progression and response to treatment, to assess the impact on the quality of life, to analyse clinically-obtained data (including imaging, cognitive and laboratory data), and correlate these with functional findings in iSS.

Long Term Neurobehavioral Effects

The long-term effect of general anesthesia on developing brain is the focus of clinicians when infants exposed to general anesthesia for a long time during operation. A retrospective study showed that children exposed to long-term or repeated operations, the anesthetics had a higher incidence of cognitive impairment in adolescence than those did no. When infants with hearing impairment undergo bilateral cochlear implant surgery, they are at high risk of long-term neurobehavioral abnormalities caused by anesthesia. In this study, investigators intend to observe the long-term behavioral abnormalities of hearing-impaired infants after intravenous or inhalation anesthesia by a ambispective cohort study.
