The Feasibility of a Physical Activity Intervention for Advanced Multiple Myeloma Patients

Although physical activity (PA) is commonly used to manage symptoms and enhance quality of life (QOL) in cancer survivors, relatively little is known regarding the benefits in advanced multiple myeloma (MM). The primary aims of the Physical Activity in Advanced Cancer Treatment (PAACT) intervention were to examine (1) program feasibility and (2) potential impact on patient outcomes. It is hypothesized that an exercise intervention will be feasible and potentially impactful.

Lighting Intervention for Cancer-related Fatigue

Fatigue is a major problem for cancer patients, and one that can persist long after treatment ends. Recent work has demonstrated that light therapy may mitigate or reduce fatigue levels in both cancer patients and cancer survivors. This protocol seeks to assess how lighting interventions distributed through a mobile app affect fatigue, sleep, and quality of life across three populations of cancer patients: breast cancer and prostate cancer, and patients who have undergone autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Participants will be randomized 1:1 to either the interventional SYNC app or to a control app.

The management of hematological malignancies justifies the completion of a complete assessment before the start of treatment. This assessment includes imaging tests (computed tomography, position emission tomography, cavitary scintigraphy), biology and very often an exploration of the bone marrow by anterior or posterior iliac biopsy. Pains related to the disease (node compression, invasion of solid organs) are taken care of at the diagnosis and often relieved by the start of the specific treatment. However, pain related to medical procedure is often overlooked and can lead to psychological trauma in some patients who may refuse to repeat these essential actions to assess the response to treatment. Anxiety contributes to pain and various relaxation techniques have already proven their effectiveness. The goal of the protocol is to reduce the pain and anxiety associated with medical procedure by using virtual reality with a helmet proposed at the time of the gesture.
