The Natural History of Procalcitonin in Hemorrhagic Stroke

Intraventricular HemorrhageIntracerebral Hemorrhage

Approximately 12% of strokes in the United States are hemorrhagic.1 Hemorrhagic stroke can lead to multiple complications including fever that is not infectious. Identifying the cause of fever can help physicians choose the best care for the patient to try and prevent further damage to the already injured brain. Bacterial infection is one possible cause of fever in the stroke patient; however an incorrect diagnosis of infection can lead to unnecessary antibiotic use. Better screening tools for infection are being developed to help fight the problem of antibiotic resistance and unnecessary antibiotic use. Unnecessary use of antibiotics in patients increases the risk of adverse events and overall healthcare costs. Procalcitonin (PCT) is one such screening tool which has been used previously to help tell apart bacterial and nonbacterial causes of infection in other disease states; however, PCT has not been studied in hemorrhagic stroke patients. The purpose of this study is to understand the progress of PCT in hemorrhagic stroke patients in order to see whether PCT can be a useful marker for infection in these patients.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and the Risk for Traumatic Intracranial Hemorrhage

Traumatic Intracranial HemorrhageBrain Injuries

Management of traumatic brain injuries causes significant efforts on emergency departments (ED) and overall health care. Patients on antithrombotic treatment with even minor trauma to the head, although without significant clinical findings, represent special challenges because the risk of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (tICH) with these agents. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of tICH in patients on various pre-injury antithrombotic treatment exposed to minor Traumatic Brain injuries (mTBI) in Sundsvall with untreated patients. Secondary aim was to explore different risk factors for tICH. Data from medical records and radiology registry with mTBI in Sundsvall hospital between 2018-2020 in Sundsvall identified 2044 patients. Demographic data, pre-injury medications with antithrombotic treatment, state of consciousness at admission and the results of CT-scans of brain was investigated.

Clinical-biological Score for Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Gastro Intestinal Bleeding

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a frequent reason for consultation in the Emergency Department. It is a real emergency associated with fairly significant morbidity and mortality. The incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (HDH) has been reported to be 67-103 per 100,000 adults per year in the UK with mortality rates of 2%-8%. While Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding (LBHB) has a lower incidence estimated at 33 per 100,000 adults per year. Additionally, compared to HDB, HDB appears to have less need for hemostatic intervention and lower mortality.

Postpartum Hemorrhage: Incidence and Risk Factors

Postpartum Hemorrhage

Postpartum hemorrhage(PPH) is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality across the world. Incidence of PPH varies in the literature from 2 to 10%, most recent studies find around 10% of PPH and 2% of severe PPH. In this study, the incidence of PPH in the maternal ward of the CHU Brugmann will be analyzed. This is a tertiary maternal ward with a high proportion of high risk pregnancies with around 3000 admissions per year. Primary aim of this study is to evaluate the epidemiology of PPH in the CHU Brugmann, incidence and possible underlying causes will be identified and compared to the current literature. A data mining technique will be used to construct a prediction model for PPH.

Study on Data Acquisition and Image Characteristics of Brain Multifrequency EIT in Healthy People...

Cerebral HemorrhageCerebral Ischemia2 more

The goal of this observational study is to compare the differences in the features of cerebral multifrequency EIT(cMFEIT) images between healthy subjects and patients with brain diseases and to explore the possibility of applying multifrequency EIT to intracranial abnormality detection.16 healthy volunteers and 8 patients with brain diseases were recruited as experimental subjects, and the cerebral EIT data of 9 frequencies in the range of 21 kHz - 100 kHz of all subjects were acquired with an EH-300 MFEIT system.

Coagulation Disorders After Aneurysmatic Subarachnoid Haemorrhage

Aneurysmatic Subarachnoid Haemorrhage

The main purpose of this study is to analyse the on-going coagulation process after aSAH. For investigation the investigators use the rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) which is a point-of-care test using a variety of activators to provide a targeted and a dynamic analysis of coagulation cascade. This is a prospective, observational clinical study done in 16 aSAH patients treated in Tampere University Hospital intensive care unit and 16 control patients (elective craniotomy due to non-ruptured intracranial aneurysm.
