Watchful Waiting Versus Repair of Oligosymptomatic Incisional Hernias

Incisional Hernia

Watchful waiting is non-inferior to surgical repair of asymptomatic and oligosymptomatic incisional hernias in terms of pain and discomfort during normal activities.

MRI Findings in Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal HerniaPain

MRI imaging in clinically evident inguinal hernia is not routinely used. In other painful inguinal conditions (such as sportsmans hernia) inflammatory changes have been detected. The aim of the present study is to determine, whether similar inflammatory changes can be detected with MRI scan in inguinal hernia. Also, patient questionaires are used preoperatively and postoperatively to determine, if preoperative pain scores can be used as a predictive value for postoperative prolonged pain/neuralgia.

Study of Surgical Mesh for Inguinal Hernia Repair

HerniaInguinal

The purpose of this study is to assess the early outcomes when using the Biomerix Revive™ as a tension-free onlay patch, Lichtenstein-style, in patients who are candidates for primary, unilateral, open inguinal hernia repair.

Hernia Prevention in Stomas

Incisional HerniaParastomal Hernia

Knowing that the risk of stoma associated herniation (parastomal or incisional) is 30-50% and the associated morbidity significant, standard placement of a prophylactic mesh upon stoma creation might prevent parastomal (or incisional herniation, after closure) and improve the quality of life of a large group of patients. This study is meant to be a pilot study to see whether the mesh related risks of infection and adhesion morbidity are acceptable if the mesh is placed intraperitoneally.

Evaluate and Compare the Rate of Para-Stomal Herniation After Permanent Stoma Formation

Hernia

This study is being done to evaluate the use of a material (Alloderm collagen mesh) during the stomal formation operation (surgery that will create a mouth-like opening on the surface of the body to an internal organ). The main purpose of this research study is to see if using this material will lower the hernia rate compared to normal repair without this material. The secondary purpose is to evaluate if using this material will increase or decrease complication rates.

Impact Evaluation of Incisional Hernia on Muscular and Postural Function

Incisional Hernia

Purpose of study is to assess perioperative functional parameters of the anterior abdominal wall muscles and postural control status in patients with large and giant incisional hernias in a controlled diagnostic study. The study involved 95 patients (100% completed) with a large or giant incisional hernia of the anterior abdominal wall. The participants were divided into three groups by type of hernia repair: bridged hernia repair, Rives-Stoppa procedure, or TAR technique. Perioperative functional parameters of the anterior abdominal wall muscles were assessed by tension dynamometry. The postural balance assessments were made by raster photostereography.

Ventral Abdominal Hernia Repair With Self Adhering, Atraumatic Mesh

Abdominal Hernia

Patients who underwent ventral abdominal hernia repair with self adhering, atraumatic mesh in sublay position are examined for their recurrence rate

Composix Kugel Mesh Recall Leaves Unresolved Problems of Patient Management

Incisional Hernia

From its introduction in 2000 until its US recall in December 2005, the Composix Kugel Mesh was implanted in an estimated 350,000 patients worldwide. The purpose of the study is to evaluate retrospectively the complications related to this mesh that occurred in our patients between 2003 and 2005, since new complications continue to be diagnosed, although the investigators discontinued the use of the mesh.
