Human Immunodeficiency VirusThis study seeks to evaluate the readiness of HIV-infected pregnant women in Zambia to initiate, adhere to, and be retained in care under the Ministry of Health's Option B+ policy. Under a 3-phased research study the investigators will: (1) conduct formative research regarding readiness to start lifelong ART in the pregnant population; (2) translate the results of formative research into a readiness assessment tool and an enhanced adherence package for pregnant women eligible for Option B+ and (3) conduct an individual randomized trial of the enhanced adherence package.

HIV InfectionsBreast FeedingThe primary aim of this study is to find out whether it is feasible to conduct a larger study looking at the effect of mobile phone text messaging added to motivational interviewing on number of participants invited to the study who consented to participate and the number with complete evaluation of infant feeding practices at all study visits. Secondary aim: In HIV-infected women initiating breastfeeding after giving birth, does interactive weekly mobile phone text messaging plus motivational interviewing versus usual care, improve self-reported adherence to exclusive or any breastfeeding 6 months post-delivery and to determine the number of women remaining in the group they were assigned until end of study or lost to follow-up (protocol adherence).
Patient Actor Training to Improve HIV Services for Adolescents in Kenya
HIV/AIDSThe goal of this study is to develop and evaluate a clinical training intervention utilizing standardized patient actors to improve communication and interpersonal skills of health care workers who serve HIV-infected adolescents and youth in Kenya, resulting in increased engagement in HIV care. The effect of the intervention on retention in care will be evaluated in a stepped-wedge randomized controlled trial at 24 HIV care and treatment facilities.

HIV InfectionDrug UseThis study, "Linking Infectious and Narcology Care - Part II (LINC-II)," will implement and evaluate a multi-faceted intervention (LINC-II), via a two-armed randomized controlled trial among 240 HIV-infected PWID in St. Petersburg. LINC-II, comprised of pharmacological therapy (i.e., rapid access to ART and receipt of naltrexone for opioid use disorder) and 12 months of strengths-based case management, will assess HIV outcomes (e.g., HIV viral load suppression), impact on care systems and cost-effectiveness of the intervention.

AdolescentsHIV/AIDS1 moreThe small RCT will assess feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a real-time intervention on ART adherence and clinical outcomes for HIV-positive adolescents. All subjects will use a wireless pill container (WPC) to monitor adherence. Intervention subjects will receive a personalized triggered reminder (cellphone message/call or bottle-based flash/alarm) when they miss a dose, and engage in monthly counseling sessions informed by their adherence data. Comparison subjects will receive usual care and an offer of counseling at monthly clinic visits.
A Mobile Phone Game to Prevent HIV Among Young Africans
HIV/AIDSThis project will test the feasibility of an electronic game to prevent HIV among African preadolescents, delivered via inexpensive Android smart phones. In order to collect feasibility data for a future randomized controlled trial, this study involves the pilot-testing of the intervention with a sample of young people in Nyanza region, Kenya, where 11.4% of young women ages 15-24 are HIV-infected. This feasibility study will be carried out with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
