Fabulous Fibre Study - Effect of Wheat Bran Extract on Gut and General Health in Healthy Aging Subjects...

HypercholesterolemiaFlatulence1 more

This is a placebo controlled, cross-over, randomized, double blinded study. The intervention food products will be taken as diet prebiotic supplements: 1. Wheat Bran Extract rich in arabinoxylan oligosaccharides : 15g/d (up to 10 g total additional dietary fibre per day). 2. Placebo product maltodextrin:equal amounts of a digestible carbohydrate. Primary endpoints are faecal microbiota analysis and faecal metabolite analysis (particularly, short chain fatty acid). Secondary endpoint is serum cholesterol, glucose, HDL and bowel function, gastrointestinal tolerance, quality of life and food frequency (by the use of questionnaires).

Gut Flora and Lipid Metabolism

Hypercholesterolemia

It is well known that metabolic responses to diet and drugs are affected by genetic and environmental factors. Still, a large part of differences in responses between individuals remains unexplained. To increase our understanding of individual differences, more and more attention is paid to the role of intestinal microbiota. Not only energy and glucose may be related to the microbiota, but also lipid metabolism. This is not surprising as lipid metabolism, glucose metabolism, and obesity are closely linked. There is substantial evidence from in particular animal studies that the gut microbiota is related to lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. However, there is less evidence to what extent modulation of the gut microbiota changes lipid and lipoprotein metabolism in humans.

Genetic Influences on Statin Blood Concentrations in African Americans

HyperlipidemiaHypercholesterolemia1 more

This study intends to determine the effects of genetic polymorphisms on statin response and daily systemic exposure (24-hour area under the time-concentration curve) of statins in African-American patients.

Statin Interchange by Pharmacist Collaborative Practice Agreement (CPA)

Hypercholesterolemia

A group of ~ 225 patients were switched from atorvastatin to an equivalent statin either by their physicians usual management or by an collaborative pharmacist coordinated process. We will compare the results of pharmacist process to the standard medical practice to find potentially which process is more effective, safer and efficient. We are surveying a total of 35 physicians, 12 using the pharmacist coordinated process and 23 not, comparing their satisfaction of the 2 processes.

Translating ATP III Cholesterol Management Guidelines Into Primary Care Practice

HypercholesterolemiaCoronary Disease3 more

This quality improvement trial aims to evaluate whether giving patients information about their coronary heart disease risk via a computer kiosk in the doctors waiting room and providing primary care doctors with a personal digital device with a decision support tool to help with cholesterol management will improve cholesterol management compared to usual care.

Cholesterol Medication Packaging Study

Hypercholesterolemia

The purpose of the overall study is to improve medication use rates among veterans by looking at the risk factors of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL). It will involve patients who have high LDL-C level (<130mg/dl) and /or may have difficulty taking their medications based on how often they refilled their medications in the last 12 months. The investigators will test an innovative adherence packaging relative to usual care. The primary hypothesis is that veterans who receive the intervention will have greater improvement in their medication adherence as measured by pill refill at 6 and 12 months of follow up as compared to the control group.
