Can Cholesterol Lowering Drugs Influence Circulating Omega-3 Fatty Acid Levels

The objective of this study is to determine if the administration of a cholesterol lowering drug like ezetimibe will reduce circulating omega-3 fatty acid (ALA) levels in patients with heart disease and hypercholesterolemia. The investigators hypothesize that their data will discover that patients receiving ezetimibe require additional dietary supplementation with omega-3 supplements to insure that these beneficial fatty acids are available to these patients.

A Study Comparing the Mechanisms of Action of Lifibrol and Pravastatin

Lifibrol is a new lipid-lowering drug which lowers cholesterol to an extent in the order of magnitude of the statins. The mechanism of action of this compound is different from the one of statins but remains unknown. The current study will investigate the mechanism of action using stable-isotope turnover methods. The study will be done in healthy male volunteers.

Alternative Options to Minimize Niacin-Induced Flushing

HypercholesterolemiaFlushing

Niacin (Vitamin B3) is known to effectively and safely treat hypercholesterolemia. However, use of niacin is limited due to incidents of flushing which limits its acceptability. Some information suggests that applesauce can reduce the incidence and severity of flushing. The apple pectin in particular is thought to be the ingredient that affects this reaction. To determine if the apple pectin does affect flushing from niacin, the investigators will study the affects of isolated apple pectin in pill form. The investigators plan on recruiting 100 patients, and giving them 1000 mg of Niacin to induce flushing. Patients will be divided into 4 treatment groups and receive either pectin, aspirin, a combination of both, or placebo. Incidents and severity of flushing will be monitored for up to 6 hours post Niacin ingestion.

Aim: To investigate the quality of history taking by physician and computer-based system. Patients: 100 inpatients presenting at the RBK for the first time and treated in the departments of nephrology and cardiology. Methods: The information obtained by the computer based system is compared with the information acquired by conventional history taking. Study endpoint is the comparison of historical data organized according to the elements in a standard medical history on a patient-by-patient basis. Study procedure History taking is performed by physicians according to the guidelines of the RBK. Within 2 days thereafter the patient is interviewed with help of the CLEOS system with the support of a study nurse.

Effects of Black Tea Intake on Serum Lipids

A diet-controlled clinical trial which attempts to provide estimates of the effect of black tea consumption on serum lipids under tightly controlled conditions, including a controlled diet. Mildly hypercholesterolemic individuals (total cholesterol levels between 4.9 and 6.7 mmol/L, 190 and 260 mg/dl), non-smoking, chronic disease-free individuals were enrolled in a 15-week, double blind, randomized crossover trial, during which they consumed a controlled low-flavonoid diet plus 5 cups of black tea or a tea-like placebo over two 4-week treatment periods.

Secondary Objectives: To assess the pharmacodynamic profile of alirocumab administered either alone or on top of ezetimibe or fenofibrate, based on other lipid parameters.
