Quality of Life Study for Pediatric and Adult Patients Undergoing Hyperthermic Peritoneal Perfusion...

Peritoneal Neoplasms

Objectives: The overall objective of this prospective study is to provide a descriptive analysis of the quality of life of cancer patients enrolled on M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Protocol 2009-0528, "A Phase II Study of Hyperthermic Peritoneal Perfusion (HIPEC) for Adolescent and Young Adults with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT) and Other Non-carcinomas". Specific Aim 1: To examine the quality of life of patients who undergo HIPEC longitudinally. It is hypothesized that physical health and functioning concerns, as reported by parent/child dyads on the Pediatric Quality of Life Cancer Module Version 3.0 (PedsQL) and the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales, will will remain stable or improve, following the surgical procedures and peritoneal perfusion described in Protocol 2009-0528. Specific Aim 2: To assess parent and patient perception of the relative benefit of HIPEC longitudinally. It is hypothesized that parents and patients will perceive HIPEC to be beneficial across time, despite the temporary postoperative pain and discomfort that is associated with the procedure. This will be done by means of a non-validated question that is specific to the surgery. Exploratory Aim: To determine whether quality of life following HIPEC varies by demographic factors (e.g., age, culture), intraoperative cisplatin dose level, or subsequent treatment modalities. Some patients who undergo HIPEC might subsequently be treated with other Phase II chemotherapy agents and/or palliative radiation, and comparing quality of life in these subgroups will be of value. Also the quality of life for groups of patients enrolled in Protocol 2009-0528 at each intraoperative cisplatin dose level will be compared.

Prediction of Disease Severity in Young Children Presenting With Acute Febrile Illness in Resource-limited...

Sepsis

Note that this is a study that is co-sponsored by Medecins Sans Frontieres, Spain, and the University of Oxford. The primary objective is to develop a risk prediction algorithm, combining measurements of host biomarkers and clinical features at the point-of-triage, for children with an acute febrile illness in resource-limited settings. The secondary objectives are to determine which host biomarkers, feasible for measurement at the point-of-care, are predictive of disease severity. Additionally to determine the optimal combination of clinical features (including demographics, anthropometric data, historical variables, vital signs, clinical signs and clinical symptoms), feasible for assessment by limited-skill health workers, that is predictive of disease severity. The tertiary objectives are to explore the impact of different methods of outcome classification on development of the risk prediction algorithm, and to explore the performance of the algorithm to predict disease severity in key presenting clinical syndromes and aetiologies.

Inadvertent Hypothermia or Hyperthermia in Pediatric Radiotherapy Practices Under Anesthesia

Hypothermia; AnesthesiaHyperthermia3 more

In prospective, observational cohort study, changes in body temperature will be investigated before the procedure and during recovery in Radiotherapy patients aged 0-18 years who need sedation due to childhood malignancies. The aims of this study were to measure the incidence and magnitude of changes in body temperature in children undergoing sedation or general anesthesia for Radiotherapy, and to determine their effects on the recovery process.

Study Investigating How Physicians Assess the Risk of Patients Developing Febrile Neutropenia During...

Chemotherapy-induced Febrile Neutropenia

This is a prospective observational study investigating how physicians assess the risk of febrile neutropenia (FN) developing in patients who will receive chemotherapy. Approximately 150-200 investigators will take part in about 100 sites in Europe, Canada and Australia. Approximately 1000 subjects will be studied, all of whom will have non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), small cell lung cancer (SCLC), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) or breast cancer and will be due to receive one of the specific chemotherapy regimens of interest. Investigators' approach to FN risk assessment will be studied using lists of possible risk factors they may consider during their assessment. Investigators will be asked to select and rank the factors they consider the most important when assessing the overall FN risk of a subject and when making the decision whether to treat with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) primary prophylaxis (PP). They will be asked to make these selections based initially on their own routine clinical practise and subsequently relating specifically to each subject recruited. This is a non-interventional study that involves no procedures outside normal care for the subjects; all data collection will be completed prior to chemotherapy administration.

Prospective Surveillance of Febrile Illness for Dengue-Endemic Areas in Asia

Dengue FeverFever

The purpose of this study is to detect acute febrile episodes and dengue infection in five Asian countries, to assess dengue seroprevalence, and to assess surveillance infrastructure at investigational sites in anticipation of a Phase 3 efficacy trial of a vaccine to prevent dengue infection. The primary objectives are: To identify acute febrile episodes among the cohort in order to detect the presence of dengue infection. To develop operational infrastructure for potential Phase III dengue efficacy trial sites. To describe the dengue seroprevalence among the cohort at baseline and at the end of the study.

Comparing the Effectiveness of Combined Hyperthermia and External Beam Radiation (EBRT) Versus EBRT...

All Type of Cancers With Bony Metastasis

The main goals of deep hyperthermia combined with external beam radiation (EBRT) on bone metastases are the response on pain relief, duration of response and time to achieve complete pain relief.

Dopamine and Muscle Function in the Heat

Muscle ForceHyperthermia

our goal is to study the effects of dopamine activity, using Ritalin ingestion, on neuromuscular function over the course of a progressive heating and cooling protocol developed in our lab. We hypothesize that Ritalin will minimize the previously reported progressive impairment in neuromuscular function with hyperthermia compared to placebo, suggesting that dopamine activity preserves neuromuscular capacity with hyperthermia.
