Coronary DiseaseHypolipoproteinemiaThe investigators want to study the relative effects of physical exercise vs. extended-release niacin (lipid-lowering drug) in patients with coronary heart disease and low HDL cholesterol ("good cholesterol") on lipid profile endothelial function as measured by ultrasound The endothelium is the inner part of the blood vessels. Impaired endothelial function is known to be associated with atherosclerosis which can ultimately lead to diseases such as stroke, heart attack and others. Endothelial function can be assessed non-invasively by ultrasound. Both interventions mentioned above have been shown to have a beneficial effect on lipid profile and endothelial function. However, the relative effects are unclear.

Lipid MetabolismInborn Errors17 moreThis study will assess what, if any, effect that ISIS 301012 (mipomersen) has on liver triglyceride content in multiple groups of subjects with varying degrees of risk for hepatic steatosis. In order to enroll subject groups with varying degrees of risk, the study has included multiple cohorts (Cohorts A-G). Additions and removal of cohorts has been accomplished with protocol amendments.

Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial
Intra-abdominal FatMetabolic Syndrome13 moreThe Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial will evaluate the effects of providing one avocado per day for recommended consumption over a 6 month period in a cohort of approximately 1000 free-living participants with increased waist circumference in comparison with a control group that will maintain their habitual diets. Participants will be recruited and screened at 4 clinics in 4 locations: Pennsylvania State University; Loma Linda University; UCLA, and Tufts University (250 per site).

Lipoprotein Metabolism in Normal Volunteers and Patients With High Levels of Lipoproteins
HypolipoproteinemiaHypercholesterolemia2 moreResearchers plan to study the fat-rich particles, called lipoproteins, which circulate in the blood. This study is designed to improve understanding of normal, as well as abnormal, lipoprotein metabolism and the role it plays in the development of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Patients participating in this study will receive injections of lipoproteins or apolipoproteins (the protein component of lipoproteins) that have been isolated and purified. These lipoproteins will be labeled with small amounts of radioactive material and sterilized before they are injected into the patient. Patients participating in the study will be required to have blood samples taken, and provide urine samples throughout the course of the study. In addition, patient will be required to follow a specially formulated diet. Patients will be weighed throughout the course of the study....
