RCT Gum Chewing on Bowel Function After Abdominal Surgery in Children

Postoperative Ileus

Traditional postoperative care has been challenged recently to improve and speedup recovery (including the return of bowel function) such that patients can be discharged to home more quickly. This approach includes earlier mobilization of the patient, and introducing solid food sooner. Additionally, there is evidence in adults to suggest that "sham feeding" by chewing gum may also speed up bowel recovery so the patient may tolerate a solid diet earlier. The aim of this study is to determine if gum chewing can enhance bowel recovery in children who undergo abdominal surgery.

Study of Postoperative Ileus in Digestive Surgery

Colorectal Surgery

Post-operative ileus is a temporary stoppage of bowel function following surgery. Indeed it can occur in 20% of cases during post-operative follow-up of bowel surgery. The absence of resumption of transit can lead to the implementation of specific treatments such as the placement of a nasogastric tube and drug treatments. To date, the definition of this event is not accepted by everyone and is not based on reproducible evaluation criteria. The main objective of this study is to evaluate a score used to date to define postoperative ileus, the IFEED score, and to compare it to the length of postoperative stay.

Intestinal Microbiota and Postoperative Ileus After Colorectal Surgery

Postoperative IleusSurgery-Complications

Postoperative ileus (POI) after colorectal surgery is frequent and is a burden for national health authority because it increases the morbidity and the length of hospital stay. Some of the stage of the mechanism of POI are known and are now targeted to reduce its occurence but despite these measures, POI still happens in 10-30% of surgeries. The role of the intestinal microbiota in POI is unknown while it could be a new target to reduce its duration or its occurence.

Stoma Tube Decompression and Postoperative Ileus After Major Colorectal Surgery

IleusBowel Obstruction

Postoperative ileus is common after colorectal surgery, occurring in up to 20% of patients. Stomas are frequently created in conjunction with major colorectal surgery. Obstruction at the level of the stoma is a common cause of bowel obstruction or ileus. This is often manifested by decrease or delay in stoma output and is often attributed to edema at the level of the stoma. Thus, a temporary tube (red robinson catheter) is placed into the stoma at bedside, which often relieves the obstruction until the edema at the level of the stoma resolves and stoma function occurs around the temporary tube. At this time, the tube is removed and the stoma continues to function normally. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether a stoma tube (red-robinson catheter) placed at the time of stoma creation would reduce the incidence of postoperative ileus in patients undergoing major colorectal surgery with creation of a stoma.

Coffee Trial - Does Coffee Intake Reduce Postoperative Ileus After Elective Colectomy?

Colectomy

The purpose of the investigators study is to investigate the effects of coffee on the return of bowel function and appetite, length of hospital stay, and complications after elective open colectomy in a prospective randomized trial. The primary efficacy endpoint is time to first bowel movement.

Postoperative Chewing Gum and Gynecological Laparoscopic Surgery

Gynecologic DiseasePostoperative Ileus1 more

The authors aimed to evaluate the effects of postoperative gum chewing on laparoscopic gynecological surgery, gastrointestinal function-intestinal mobility and early postoperative recovery. Patients undergoing elective gynecological laparoscopy were randomized. Demographic and characteristic features of the patients were recorded. Operation type, operation and anesthesia information were recorded. Patients underwent a postoperative routine regimen. Starting from the sixth hour, the sugar-free gum was crushed every 15 minutes until the gas was released. Postoperative follow-up was performed routinely. The first bowel movements, first bowel movements and first gas extraction and first decongestation periods were recorded.

The Effect of Rocking Chair Movement on the Start of Bowel Functions in Patients With Gastrointestinal...

Postoperative Ileus

The Effect of Rocking Chair Movement on the Start of Bowel Functions in Patients With Gastrointestinal System Surgery The research will be carried out as a randomized controlled experimental study in patients with open gastrointestinal tract surgery in order to evaluate the effect of rocking chair movement to be given in addition to standard care in the initiation of postoperative bowel functions (post-operative first time gas, first time defecation).Ethics committee and institution permissions and written consents of individuals were obtained prior to the study. The universe of the study was composed of patients with open gastrointestinal surgery lying in the general surgery service of a hospital in Eskisehir. With the error margin of 0.05, 90% test power, 30 people in intervention and control groups, 60 patients in total will be included in the research.Appointment of patients to intervention and control groups was done by stratification and block randomization method according to gastric and intestinal surgery. The draw method was used to assign stratified patients to blind technique intervention and control groups in order to avoid side-holding, and an equal number (blocking) patients were assigned to each group. The individuals in the intervention group in the rocking chair three times a day, 20 minutes, a total of 60 minutes after the first day after surgery. The individuals in the control group will sit in a standard chair in the same time as the intervention group in the non-rocking chair. The data will be collected using the "Descriptive characteristics determination form", "Intervention Group Intestinal Functions Evaluation Form" and "Control Group Intestinal Functions Evaluation Form".

Effect of Acupuncture on Postoperative Ileus After Gastric Surgery (EAPIG)

Ileus

Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common problem after major abdominal surgery. Acupuncture is being accepted in the West as a treatment option for managing POI and various functional gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore, we conducted a prospective randomized pilot study to evaluate the effect of electro-acupuncture on POI and other surgical outcomes in patients who underwent gastric surgery for a later large-scale study.

The Effects of Combined Gum-chewing and Parenteral Metoclopramide on Post-operative Ileus

Ileus Postoperative

A delay in the return of bowel function is a common occurrence after abdominal surgeries.1 The goal of this study was to test the effect of the combined use of chewing a gum and administering metoclopramide intravenously on the duration of this natural delay in the return of bowel function after abdominal surgeries. Patients were grouped into four: the first group received both gum and metoclopramide; the second group received only gum; the third group received only metoclopramide, while the fourth group (the control group) received sterile water for injection. The groups were compared for the time taken for bowel function to return and the duration of hospital stay.
