FeverThe purpose of this study is to assess if a single dose of Diclofenac potassium (0.5 mg/kg) is more or as effective as a single dose of Acetaminophen (10 mg/kg) in the reduction of fever during 2 hours, in the treatment of febrile children with acute upper respiratory infections. This is a comparative double blind, double dummy, randomized study on the effectiveness of Diclofenac potassium versus Acetaminophen in febrile children with acute upper respiratory tract infections. The patient will be randomized to either group: Group A (Diclofenac potassium (0.5 mg/kg) or Group B (Acetaminophen (10 mg/kg)). A Health Care Professional trained will measure the temperature during 2 hours. During the study period, parents or legal representatives will be invited to fill a survey about the habits and knowledge regarding fever management at home.

HCV InfectionThis is a Phase 2b, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, multicenter study investigating the safety, tolerability and efficacy of two oral doses of GS-9450 in adults with chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Approximately 240 subjects 18-65 years of age who meet study entry criteria will be randomized (in other words, selected at random, like flipping a coin) to one of three treatment groups (80 subjects per treatment group) as follows:GS-9450 10 mg once daily,GS-9450 40 mg once daily, or matching placebo once daily. Following randomization, subjects will return within seven business days for a Baseline (Day 1) visit, at which time study medication will be dispensed and subjects will enter a 26 week treatment phase. During the treatment phase, subjects will receive study drug once daily for 24 weeks and then taper off of study drug over the following 2 weeks by receiving study drug once every other day for one week and then every 3 days for one week. Following completion of the treatment phase, subjects will enter a 4-week off-treatment follow-up phase.

UTIs are painful and have the potential to turn into kidney infections. We are asking women who self-catheterize after surgery to try either an antibiotic or a placebo pill so we can see if we can prevent UTIs without causing side effects. This study will not require any additional visits or blood draws. You will be asked to answer some questions, keep a brief diary of your experience, and immediately report any symptoms of a UTI to your doctor.

Insulin given by subcutaneous injections has longer duration compared to intravenous given insulin which makes it more difficult to control. The hypothesis behind the trial is the concept that insulin infusion is more effective in reaching normoglycemia in diabetic subjects during treatment for ulcer infections and/or planned cardio-vascular surgery. The study evaluates a target controlled insulin infusion or conventional therapy as antidiabetic treatment during ulcer infection and after cardio- vascular surgery. Secondary efficacy parameter will be hospital stay, laboratories for inflammation and oxidative stress.

Chronic Hepatitis BHIV InfectionsThe efficacy of pegylated interferons in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B has shown superior results to standard of care in patients only infected with hepatitis B. The efficacy of pegylated interferon for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in HIV-coinfected patients is not known at present. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of pegylated interferon in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B in HIV-infected individuals. Apart from evaluating the efficacy of pegylated interferon therapy in this setting as such, i.e. in patients without present or future need of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV-infection, there is a second purpose of this study, to investigate whether combination treatment of HBV-infection may be superior to pegylated interferon therapy alone. Therefore patients without need of HAART are offered pegylated interferon alfa-2a over 48 weeks. Patients who require HAART are offered emtricitabine / tenofovir DF containing HAART over 72 weeks PLUS pegylated interferon alfa-2a over 48 weeks vs. emtricitabine / tenofovir DF containing HAART over 72 weeks WITHOUT pegylated interferon-alfa-2a.

To study in detail the immune effects of lowering viral burden with antiviral combination drugs with and without T cell infusion on antiviral CTL activity, viral suppression and proliferation, circulating T cell phenotype, T cell apoptosis, CD4 cell numbers, DTH reaction, and inflammatory cytokine levels. In an HIV-infected person, there is an ongoing struggle between HIV replication and host immune control. In the past decade most therapeutic strategies have targeted the virus. This approach has been frustrated by viral mutation to evade drug sensitivity. Promising drugs have recently been approved and there are encouraging sustained results from combination antiviral chemotherapy. However, even the most potent drug regimens do not seem to be curative, may eventually lead to drug resistance and may not completely restore lost immune function.
