Orthomyxoviridae InfectionInfluenza1 morePrimary Objective: To evaluate for each influenza strain the non-inferiority of Investigational Fluzone vaccine to the standard Fluzone® vaccine in healthy subjects aged 6 to 35 months or 3 to 8 years. Secondary Objectives: To describe the immunogenicity of of Investigational Fluzone vaccine to the standard Fluzone® vaccine in healthy subjects aged 6 to 35 months or 3 to 8 years. Immunogenicity and Safety of GSK Biologicals' HPV Vaccine 580299 in Healthy Japanese Females 10-15...
InfectionsPapillomavirusHuman papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been established as a necessary cause of cervical cancer. GSK Biologicals has developed an HPV vaccine (580299) which targets the 2 most common oncogenic HPV types (HPV-16 and HPV-18), found in approximately 70% of all cervical cancers. In previous trials, the vaccine has been found to be efficacious in the prevention of incident and persistent HPV-16/18 infections and associated cytological abnormalities. HPV vaccination should ideally be performed before onset of sexual activity. Previous studies showed that GSK Biologicals' HPV vaccine 580299 is safe and immunogenic when administered to European, Asian, Latin American and Australian pre-adolescents and adolescents. Here, we aim to assess the immunogenicity and safety of the GSK Biologicals' HPV vaccine 580299 in healthy Japanese pre-adolescent and adolescent female subjects aged 10-15 years. The Protocol Posting has been updated in order to comply with the FDA Amendment Act, Sep 2007.

Liver Cancer Prevention Trial in Patients With Chronic Hep C Infection
Adult Primary Liver CancerHepatitis C InfectionThis randomized phase II trial studies how well S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Disulphate P-Toluene-Sulfonate (SAMe) works compared to a placebo in preventing liver cancer in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection. Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer from forming. The use of SAMe may keep cancer from forming in patients with advanced liver disease

Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Total Knee Prosthesis
InfectionKnee prosthesis infection is a severe complication. The use of a tourniquet during surgery impairs the efficacy of the antibiotic prophylaxis. We hypothesize that the antibiotic administration before tourniquet release decrease the infection rate. Methods: patients who undergo a total knee arthroplasty will be randomized to receive one of the following regimens of antibiotic prophylaxis:Standard: cefuroxime 1.5 g i.v. 10 min before tourniquet + placebo 10 min before tourniquet release + cefuroxime 1'5 g i.v. 6h after closing surgical wound.Experimental: cefuroxime 1.5 g i.v. 10 min before tourniquet + cefuroxime 1.5 g i.v. 10 min before tourniquet release + cefuroxime 1'5 g i.v. 6h after closing surgical wound.

PneumoniaLower Respiratory Tract InfectionThe purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness of an enhanced oral hygiene protocol in preventing pneumonia among nursing home residents.

Safety Study of a Plant-based H5 Virus-Like Particles (VLP) Vaccine in Healthy Adults
Virus DiseasesRNA Virus Infections2 moreThe primary objective is to assess the safety and tolerability of two consecutive doses of plant-based H5 VLP, (H5N1) pandemic influenza vaccine combined with Alhydrogel®, given 21 days apart, at three dose levels: 5µg, 10µg and 20µg., compared to the placebo, and combined with Alhydrogel®.

Clipping Versus No Hair Removal and the Risk of Surgical Site Infections
Surgical Site InfectionSuperficial Surgical Site Infection2 moreThe objective of this study is to determine whether hair clipping is non-inferior to no hair removal in preventing superficial, deep, and organ space surgical site infections (SSI) in patients undergoing various general surgical procedures, evaluated after surgery by an assessor blinded to treatment allocation. Additional goals include evaluating wound complications that arise in patients that have hair clipped and in patients that do not have hair removed and determining the impact of clipping versus no hair removal and SSI versus no SSI on length of hospital stay.

Study of CMX001 to Prevent/Control Cytomegalovirus Infection in R+ Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant...
Cytomegalovirus InfectionThis was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation study of brincidofovir (BCV) administered orally once or twice weekly for up to 11 weeks. Dosing was initiated immediately following engraftment (between Days 14-30 post-transplant) to prevent/control cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or prevent disease in R+ hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) recipients.
