Investigating the Possible Link Between Habitual Diet, Physical Activity, Sleeping Patterns, Obesity...
ObesityMetabolic Syndrome1 moreIn the UK, 25% of the adults are affected by metabolic syndrome (NHS, 2016). Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of different conditions including: hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance hypertriglyceridemia, dyslipidaemia and hypertension. Such individuals also have increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The factors contributing to the development of metabolic syndrome are potentially numerous and understudied in humans, with much of what we think we know coming from animal research. Recent animal studies have pointed towards gut health playing a role in metabolic health. More specifically it has been suggested that changes in the composition of the gut microbiota may drive insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes through a mechanism that is linked to increased gut permeability and the development of metabolic endotoxemia and inflammation. Yet, this link has not been confirmed in humans. This research will look at the relationship between diet, physical activity, sleeping patterns, obesity status and age etc. and measures of gut bacterial composition, gut barrier function and metabolic health. Findings will provide us with new insights on the effect of different physiological and behavioural/ lifestyle variables on gut health and metabolic function.
Effects of Interleukin-6 Inhibition on Vascular, Endothelial and Left Ventricular Function in Rheumatoid...
Rheumatoid ArthritisInflammationRecent studies show beneficial effect of the inhibition of interleukin-6 (IL-6) activity on vascular and left ventricular (LV) function. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether anakinra, an IL-6 receptor antagonist, improves vascular, endothelial and LV function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
The Role of HRM and Specific Biomarkers of Inflammation in the Diagnosis of Patients With Dysphagia...
Eosinophilic EsophagitisThe aim of the project is to assess the correlation between the results of high-resolution oesophageal manometry and specific biomarkers of inflammation (eotaxin 3, major basic protein, IL-5, IL-13, TGF-beta1) with symptoms of dysphagia, endoscopic and histological features and the assessment of quality of life in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. Research hypothesis: The results of high resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) and specific inflammatory biomarkers correlate with symptoms of dysphagia, endoscopic and histological features, and assessment of quality of life in patients with eosinophilic oesophagitis. HRM, along with the determination of specific inflammatory biomarkers present in the peripheral blood, may serve as a less invasive method of assessing the effectiveness of the treatment of eosinophilic oesophagitis in relation to the currently used endoscopic examinations.
Inflammation and Neurocognitive Damage Markers in Elderly People With Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive Sleep ApneaSleep Apnea7 moreThe aging process tends to promote an overall increase in inflammation compromising the immunologic system regulation, sleep/wakefulness pattern, and neurocognitive performance. In elders, there is an increase in repetitive arousals during sleep, secondary to breathing interruption by pharynx collapse, generating a transient reduction in oxygen delivery to the brain known as obstructive sleep apnea. This lack in oxygen supply results in an inflammatory process producing brain damage. Some substances present in the blood seem to be associated to neurocognitive damage, like S100β protein, cortisol, interleukin 1-β,6 and TNF-α. In the other way, a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) enhances cognitive function, and memory consolidation improvement.
Nutritional Habits, and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Outcome
Covid19Chronic Inflammation1 moreAs of May 30th more than 23,000 cases of COVID -19 cases were confirmed in Egypt with total deaths of 913. Post viral entry, intense immune response against the virus with infiltration of monocytes and macrophages into alveolar cells with decreasing number of lymphocytes in peripheral blood along with reduced lymphocytes in lymphoid organs, hypercoagulability, thrombosis and multiple organ damage, The gut microbiota and immune homeostasis seem to have a back and forth relationship. Also, gut microbiota derived signals are known to tune the immune cells for pro and anti-inflammatory responses thereby affecting the susceptibility to various diseases. Healthy gut microbiome essentially could be pivotal in maintaining an optimal immune system to prevent an array of excessive immune reactions that eventually become detrimental to lungs and vital organ systems. Numerous studies have shown that the patient's nutritional status have a significant effect on an individual's immunity and over all health status and it has been suggested that nutritional deficiencies may predispose to severe forms of COVID-19 infections. Co-existing non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) in COVID-19 patients have been found to delay patients recovery and worsen their prognosis, the reason may be due to aggravated inflammatory pathology found in NCDs exacerbating COVID-19 infection. The aim of the study is to evaluate the role dietary habits among COVID-19 Egyptian patients and whether type of diet (Mediterranean or Western) will affect disease outcomes
Effect of Trait Anxiety in Women on Oral Health Status and Oral Health Care-Seeking Behavior
Anxiety DisordersOral Disease12 moreTrait anxiety is the tendency of an individual to perceive environmental stimuli such as different events and situations as threatening; it's stable and reflects how an individual generally feels. In 2015, it was estimated that 3.6% of the population lived with anxiety disorders globally, i.e. approximately 264 million people lived with anxiety disorders worldwide of which 31.36 million resided in the Eastern Mediterranean region, that's to say, 10% of the global number of anxiety cases. Moreover, females were more affected than males in a proportion of 4.6% as opposed to 2.6% respectively. The prevalence of anxiety has increased by 14.9% from 2005 to 2015. In addition, in 2017, approximately 42 million new cases were recorded globally. In Egypt, the total number of anxiety cases were more than 3 million in 2015 thus indicating that 4.2% of the total population lived with anxiety. Anxiety may affect the individual's utilization of dental services and predispose to a delay in seeking dental treatment and thus might compromise the overall oral health. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the effect of trait anxiety on the oral health status of women and determine their behavior towards the utilization of dental services. To our knowledge, no previous research has been conducted to assess such relationship in Egypt.

POCDThis study use Loewenstein cognitive function rating scale to meet the standards of the elderly cognitive function assessment. POCD diagnostic criteria used is the recommended value Z current international law, in order to reduce the effects of exercise, we selected 50 cases of patients with age-matched healthy control group as a spouse, the same scale testing. And Loewenstein Assessment Scale cognitive function after some domestic research proved to have good sensitivity, and easy to test small changes in cognitive ability. Before the investigation began strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, the use of simple intelligence scale exclude preoperative cognitive decline in the elderly significantly, the use of depression rating scale for anxiety rating scale before surgery to exclude severe depression and severe anxiety in elderly self self patient. Validity and Reproducibility of OSND (Objective Score of Nutrition on Dialysis) as a Nutritional...
Malnutrition-Inflammation SyndromeHemodialysis Nutritional Risk StratificationThis prospective observational study is planned to validate OSND against the prospective morbidity and mortality in chronic hemodialysis patients and to examine the hypothesis that OSND risk stratification of chronic HD patients is useful in predicting outcomes and better than its component alone or in diverse combinations. The investigators specific aim is to validate OSND in chronic HD patients by comparing it with conventional measures of nutritional state, including blood tests, anthropometry, MIS, GNRI, bioelectric impedance analysis and several measures of clinical outcome including prospective mortality and hospitalization.
