Video Review of the Frequency and Assessment of Head Impacts During the FIFA World Cup 2022TM

Head InjuryConcussion2 more

This is an exploratory observational study. Broadcasted video footage is used to review all head impacts during all 64 matches in the football tournament. All head impacts are registered, and simple descriptive statistics are used to create overviews of the head impact characteristics, including video signs of potential concussion, observed contact, location of the head impact, presence and timing of medical assessment, whether there was foul play and sanction, and if the player was substituted.

CISBAR Intervention for Social Communication After ABI

Brain Injuries

This was the first trial of a new intervention, Collaborative Interpersonal Strategy Building with Audio Reflection (CISBAR), for improving social communication in adults following brain injury. When developing CISBAR, I aimed to provide speech-language pathologists (SLPs) with an integrated package for goal-setting and treatment of social communication after ABI by combining motivational interviewing and goal attainment scaling with evidence-based treatment elements drawn from social cognitive and conversational coaching approaches. To elicit the targeted communication behaviors, CISBAR adds a new system of selecting equivalent conversation topics. To foster self-awareness and reflection, CISBAR incorporates the Conversational Rating System for ABI (CoRS-ABI). I used a single-case experimental, multiple-probe design across participants to evaluate CISBAR.

Illuminating Neuropsychological Dysfunction and Systemic Inflammatory Mechanisms Gleaned After Hospitalization...

DeliriumCognitive Impairment6 more

Cognitive skills are essential to live independently, manage finances, maintain employment, and function in society. Loss of these cognitive skills puts a tremendous burden on society as seen with dementias, Alzheimer's disease, and traumatic brain injury. The INSIGHT-ICU Study (Illuminating Neuropsychological dysfunction and Systemic Inflammatory mechanisms Gleaned after Hospitalization in Trauma-ICU Study) is the first comprehensive and longitudinal long-term cognitive impairment study after traumatic injury. The societal impact of long-term cognitive impairment after trauma is immense given that these patients are young and constitute a large proportion of employable adults.

Online Emotional Regulation Group Treatment

Traumatic Brain InjuryExecutive Dysfunction1 more

This study will examine the feasibility of online delivery of emotional regulation training to individuals with TBI with emotional dysregulation. 80 subjects with significant emotional dysregulation will be enrolled and will receive 24 60-minute emotional regulation sessions twice a week for 12 weeks, delivered online in group modality. Attendance and compliance will be tracked, and outcomes will be monitored using online data collection methods. Treatment satisfaction and participant subjective experience will also be assessed.

Delayed Versus Early Enoxaparin Prophylaxis After Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Venous ThromboembolismTraumatic Brain Injury

Brain injured patients are at high risk for forming blood clots in the legs and lungs. For non-brain injured trauma patients, we decrease the chances of these blood clots forming by placing the patients on a low dose of the blood thinner enoxaparin. Starting patients with a brain injury on the blood thinner is problematic, however, as this can theoretically cause the brain injury to worsen. Trauma surgeons wait a variable period of time before starting this blood thinner because waiting too long can result in the formation of these blood clots in the legs and lungs. Previous research has shown that some brain injuries which are of lower severity can have enoxaparin started at 24 hours after injury if the brain injury is stable on a repeated computed tomography (CT) scan of the head. This is a pilot study designed to look at the rates of worsening of brain injury if the low dose blood thinner is started at 24 versus 96 hours post-injury.

TEleRehabilitation Nepal (TERN) to Improve Quality of Life of People With Spinal Cord Injury and...

Spinal Cord Injuries; Traumatic Brain Injury; Acquired Brain InjuryStroke

Nepal is a low-income country with over 3 million individuals with physical disabilities and currently no government-run specialist rehabilitation services. The aim of this research proposal is to work in partnership with a Nepal Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC, Nepal) to achieve the following: estimate the rehabilitation needs in individuals after stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury in rural communities after discharge from SIRC hold user and stakeholder workshops to explore the role of multidisciplinary teleconferencing methods for remote assessment and management and agree systems for piloting deploy and pilot a novel telerehabilitation system to improve the lives of these individuals, and evaluate it in terms of feasibility and acceptability

Case Studies: Promoting Strategy Use in Functional Activities

Cognitive ImpairmentExecutive Dysfunction1 more

The purpose of the study is to provide evidence of feasibility, acceptability, patient satisfaction, and patient perceived benefit of the Multicontext (MC) approach. The project consists of eight case studies of persons with acquired brain injury undergoing acute inpatient rehabilitation who have difficulties in completing multiple step activities due to deficits in executive function and/or visual perception. The MC approach provides a structured occupational therapy framework that provides guidelines for enhancing strategy use and self monitoring skills for person's with acquired brain injury.

Effectiveness of the Neural Mobilization on Upper Limb Functionality in Patients With Acquired Brain...

Hemiplegia and HemiparesisAcquired Brain Injury

The main objective: To determine changes in physiological and structural properties of upper limb muscles with spasticity in patients with acquired brain injury after applying neural mobilization improving their functional performance, their participation in society and quality of life. Hypothesis: Peripheral nerve mobilizations performed with neurodynamic techniques in upper limb in patients with acquired brain injury, generate changes at structural and physiological level, favoring the performance of daily life activities and improving the quality of life.
