The Association Between the Duration of Acute Kidney Injury and New-onset Chronic Kidney Disease...

Acute Kidney InjuryChronic Kidney Disease5 more

The investigators aimed to evaluate the association between the duration and stage of acute kidney injury (AKI) and the development of chronic kidney disease during postoperative three years in patients undergoing cardiac or thoracic aortic surgery.

Trauma Specific Frailty Index

Physical Trauma

Increasing age is a known predictor of morbidity and mortality after a traumatic injury with worst outcomes seen in patients with age greater than 65 years. Geriatric trauma patients are a unique cohort of patients who are highly prone to develop decompensated state following the stress of traumatic event leading to adverse outcomes. In a prospective study the primary site demonstrated the presence of frailty syndrome as a better predictor of in-hospital complications and adverse discharge disposition among geriatric trauma patients than age. Presently, Methodist Dallas Medical Center aims to participate in the large scale prospective multi-institutional validation of TSFI to assess the sensitivity and specificity of Trauma Specific Frailty Index in predicting adverse outcomes through a diverse account utilizing multiple facilities.

Meniscal Lesions in Return to Sport After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

ACL InjuryMeniscus Lesion1 more

Most athletes who undergo Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction (ACLR) plan to return to some level of sporting (RTS) activity. However, rates of return to pre-injury sport are often less than might be expected and many factors influence whether individuals return to sport after this surgery. This study aims to better understand the role of meniscal lesions in RTS and to assess the advantage of the integrated evaluation with clinical, biomechanical and psychological tests to decide the correct RTS timing in non-professional athletes undergoing ACLR.

CT Change Management in Trauma Patients

TraumaNeurologic Deficits

In high-volume trauma centers, multi-slice CT scanners have become the routine imaging modality for screening trauma patients due to their speed and accuracy. In trauma patients with no known neurologic deficits, diagnostic CT is often obtained though it remains unclear whether this affects management of the patient [1]. With the growing cost of health care, a careful look at the benefit and cost of CT is needed to determine how to best utilize this modality in the evaluation of trauma patients. HYPOTHESIS: In trauma patients with absence of neurologic defects, the addition of comprehensive CT does not change overall clinical management.

Acute Kidney Injury as a Risk Factor for Myocardial Injury After Non Cardiac Surgery

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) postoperatively has been identified to be 21.6% in adults and 18.3% in hospitalized individuals. Surgery-related AKI is a severe complication that is related not only to short-term complications as increases in mortality rate and development of cardiac complications but also with complications on long term, such as development of chronic kidney disease. A better understanding of the mechanism of this hypthesis will lead to better management of this complication.

Finnish Spinal Cord Injury Study (FinSCI)

Spinal Cord InjuriesHealth1 more

The purpose of the Finnish Spinal Cord Injury Study (FinSCI) is to identify factors related to the health and functioning of people with spinal cord injury (SCI), their challenges with accessibility and how such factors are interconnected. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is used in the study as a structured framework. The study participants will be recruited from three SCI outpatient clinics, which together are responsible for the life-time care of the SCI population in Finland. Mixed methods are used including a questionnaire and interviews. The survey will be formed from patient-reported instruments; SCI-specified Spinal Cord Injury Secondary Condition Scale, Spinal Cord Independence Measure, Nottwil Environmental Factors Inventory Short Form and selected items of the generic instruments of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System and National study of health, well-being and service. The survey covers 51 ICF categories. The study results can help develop care and rehabilitation policies with SCI, the planning of training models and information provided to various parties involved.

Outcomes After Laparotomy for Penetrating Abdominal Trauma

Penetrating Abdominal Trauma

The purpose of this study is to evaluate outcomes of adult patients hospitalised due to penetrating abdominal trauma at a tertiary trauma hospital in South Africa. Our primary objective is to study the association between waiting time to surgery and outcome (mortality, complications, and length of hospital stay) in normotensive patients treated with laparotomy for penetrating abdominal trauma.
