Screw Versus Tightrope Syndesmotic Injury Fixation in Weber C Ankle Fractures

The aim of our study is to compare two different syndesmosis transfixation methods in AO/OTA Weber C ankle fractures. Our hypothesis is that 50% of screw fixed fibulas but only 5% of suture-button fixed fibulas are in malposition. All skeletally mature patients (16 years or older) with AO/OTA Weber C type fractures operated within a week after trauma are consecutively included into the study. The tibiofibular transfixation is randomly performed either by a 3,5 mm tricortical screw or a suture-button (TightRope). Malposition of the tibiofibular joint is assessed in an intraoperative computed tomography. Clinical outcome is assessed by using Olerud-Molander, RAND ja 36-Item Healt Survey after 1-year from the injury.

In this study we compare two treatment options for ankle sprains. 100 patients were randomised between a flexible cast treatment and a removable and adjustable brace made out of the same materials. Follow-up was 4 months. Primary outcome were functional scores. Secondary outcome measures were patient satisfaction scores with treatment as well as treatment result.

Impact of Physiotherapy Intervention for Children With Ankle Sprains

This study will investigate whether adding a physiotherapy intervention to standard Emergency Department care will lead to improved recovery following an ankle sprain in the pediatric and adolescent population as well as to a decrease recurrence of injuries during the year following the initial ankle sprain. Children will be allocated to standard care or to the added intervention group. The study hypothesis is that recovery will be better while recurrence of injury will be less in those receiving the added physiotherapy intervention.

Changes in Unstable Ankles After Balance Training

This study is evaluating reflex board training to see if it will help people who frequently roll their ankles. We are investigating several tests that evaluate the ability of the neuromuscular system to control ankle movement. This study is in 2 parts:Part 1 looks at changes after 1 day of reflex training; Part 2 looks at changes after 6 weeks of reflex training. It is thought that the reflex training will improve measures of static and dynamic balance as well as spinal reflex measures.

Plaster Cast Versus DJO Walker in Paediatric Ankle Injuries

Present treatment of children with stable ankle and foot injuries very often involves a period in plaster cast(s). In the last decade in adult patients this has been superceded in many instances by the use of a removable foot brace/splint. There are many benefits to this approach including progressive rehabilitation, reduced costs in materials and personnel, improved hygiene and adaptability of fit. The use of such a splint has not been investigated in children and this project aims to assess the value of introducing this as a treatment mode through the analysis of outcomes between traditional cast treatment and the newer removable brace/splint treatment. The outcomes will include patients' preferences, clinical results and relative costings.

Mulligan Concept in the Treatment of Ankle Sprains

Aim of the study is to establish the efficiency of the mulligan concept vs a sham group (who will also serve as control). Patient with an subacute ankle sprains will be assess following the mulligan concept and then randomized in two groups: Mobilization with movement (MWM) group and Sham group. MWM group will receive 3 sets of 10 repetitions of treatment (i.e. passive accessory glide during an active dorsiflexion) while the sham treatment will do 3 sets of 10 active dorsiflexion with the hand of the Physiotherapist only apply on the skin. 3 sessions with 4 days apart will take place. outcomes will be measure before and after every sessions.

Syndesmotic Injury and Fixation in Supination-External (SE) Ankle Fractures

The aim of our study was to determine whether transfixation of unstable syndesmosis is necessary in supination-external rotation type ankle fractures. Our hypothesis was that syndesmotic ligaments heal at the proper length after malleolar reduction and that syndesmotic transfixation is not needed in supination-external rotation fracture types.
