Adolescent Acts of Kindness Intervention

InflammationMental Health Wellness 1

Adolescents will complete a 4-week intervention, during which they will either complete a kind act for others, complete a kind act for themselves, or report their daily activities three days per week. Psychological and physiological measures will be indexed before and after the intervention.

The Effects of Resveratrol Supplementation on Cognition, Cerebral Blood Flow, Microbiota and Systemic...

Cognitive Function and MoodCerebral Blood Flow3 more

Previous research shows that a diet high in fat has harmful effects on gut health. This increases the chance of developing obesity-related diseases (such as type 2 diabetes) and disrupts cognition and mood. Research has suggested that gut health can be improved by taking certain supplements, including resveratrol (a polyphenol found primarily in red grape skins). Resveratrol has also been shown to improve brain blood flow and possibly brain function - however, there is limited research studying this. This study will investigate the effects of 12 weeks daily consumption of resveratrol on cognitive function, cerebral blood flow, gut microbiota and systemic inflammation in overweight and obese healthy adults.

Effect of Preoperative Music on Sterile Inflammation Induced by Laparoscopic Surgery

Music TherapyCholecystitis/Cholelithiasis2 more

Surgery induced sterile inflammation leaves behind a biomolecular footprint measurable by various pro-inflammatory markers e.g. IL-6, CD(Cluster of differentiation)19B, HsCRP(High-sensitivity CRP) etc. Music is a non-pharmacological means in attenuating this inflammatory pathway thereby improving Health related quality of life measurable by improved postoperative convalescence. Correct timing of music application is a lacuna in the knowledge. This research aims at evaluating the effect of preoperative music on sterile inflammation induced by index Laparoscopic Surgery (Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy) and its proposed beneficial effects on patient reported outcomes. A total of 50 patients divided into 2 groups (test and control) will be evaluated in this triple blind randomized controlled study aiming at evaluating the biomolecular signatures of sterile inflammatory response and its correlation with improved postoperative convalescence. All the patients will be followed up for a period of 1 month postoperatively to assess for overall improvement in health related quality of life. Collected data will be analysed using updated SPSS software and a p value of less than 0.05 will be taken as statistically significant in support of the measured indices.

Effects of Adding Chickpeas to the American Diet on Fecal Microbiota Composition and Markers of...

Inflammation

This prospective study will assess the effects of adding legumes, especially chick peas, to the diet of healthy adults on the commensal bacteria from feces of human subjects and resulting self-reported GI symptoms as well as markers of immune function.

Prenatal Inflammation and Perinatal Outcomes

Pregnancy

Preventing poor perinatal outcomes is the goal of all prenatal care, yet just who will go on to develop preeclampsia or have a growth-restricted baby is notoriously difficult to predict. A growing body of evidence suggests inflammatory markers can help predict poor outcomes, even prior to, and beyond, the current pregnancy. Our project will measure the response of one robust inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein (CRP), to a safe immune provocation recommended for all pregnant women (the seasonal influenza vaccine), and to find out whether CRP response is associated with increased risk for gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, preterm delivery, or birth weight. This work will help inform whether inflammatory markers should become part of routine prenatal care.

Effects of Chronic Intake of Processed Foods on Circulating Inflammatory Markers in Healthy Men...

Inflammation

This study aims to investigate the effects of diets enriched or depleted in foods at high risk of containing pro-inflammatory bacterial molecules, on markers of inflammation and cardiometabolic risk in healthy men. The study design is an interventional diet study, with 7 days dietary advice to avoid processed foods, followed by 4 days in which lunch and evening meal are provided to volunteers. Anthropometric and blood markers of cardiovascular disease risk are measured at the start and end of each dietary phase. The aim is to gain an improved understanding of how processed foods modify risk of cardiometabolic disease.

Effect of an Antioxidant-rich Diet During Moderate Altitude Training

Oxidative StressAdaptation Reaction1 more

Athletes, especially in endurance sports, are at increased risk of oxidative stress and inflammation-related diseases and injuries. The production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and inflammatory markers increase during exercise and especially during altitude training. Antioxidant supplementation is commonly used among athletes in the belief that it prevents oxidative stress and oxidative damage. A transient increase of RONS is however necessary to activate signaling cascades initiating training adaptation. Antioxidant supplementation has been shown to inhibit the exercise effects in several independent studies, possibly by interfering/reducing the signal cascades initiated by RONS. However, it is unknown whether a high intake of antioxidant rich foods can affect the amount of RONS, inflammation markers and/or training adaptation. The investigators want to examine whether an increased intake of natural antioxidants in the form of antioxidant-rich foods fruits, vegetables and berries, in line with the official Norwegian dietary advice can affect antioxidant status, immune function and training adaptation associated with altitude training in Norwegian elite athletes.

Nutrition, Oral Health and Type 2 Diabetes

Inflammation

Obesity continues to pose major public health challenges worldwide with cardiovascular damage, hypertension and diabetes as possible subsequent conditions. The obese are at risk for mortality and morbidity as they suffer from a high level of immune sensitivity with consequences related to damage to the circulation and microvasculature. The immune process itself is modulated by cytokines, which are small proteins which can modulate the spectrum of the inflammatory process. These proteins may act as biomarkers in the mouth. Diabetes is also a consequence of sustained obesity and this condition can strongly influence immune status. Diabetes is characterized by the failure to produce the hormone insulin or a loss of sensitivity to insulin. Without insulin high blood glucose results in the release of a series of pro-inflammatory factors, which lead to pathological processes in several organs leading to high mortality and morbidity. Periodontitis, a common complication of diabetes, is an inflammatory condition of the soft tissue of the periodontium, causing alveolar bone loss. The accessibility of the oral cavity facilitates the study of early inflammatory processes. Changes in diet may reduce inflammation, controlling gingival inflammation as well as clinical treatment. Since 2004 Igelösa Life Science AB has developed a modified Nordic diet based on evidence, primarily from the Japanese island of Okinawa, where the world's oldest and most healthy people live. In this study we will investigate the association between Igelösa dietary intake and measurements of inflammation in 30 overweight individuals with or without other systemic diseases.

Inflammation and Threat Sensitivity in PTSD

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

The overall goals of this study are to examine the relationship between chronic inflammation and threat and reward sensitivity, and to determine the effects of acute inflammation on threat sensitivity, in individuals with and without moderate to severe PTSD symptoms. The investigators will first conduct an observational study to examine the relationship between chronic inflammation and neural and behavioral measures of threat sensitivity. Then, the investigators will conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, between-subjects study to examine the effects of acute inflammation on neural and behavioral measures of threat sensitivity.

Validation of a Lung Inflammation Model in Healthy Volunteers by Radiological Tools and Glucocorticoid...

Experimental Lung Inflammation

The purpose of this study is to investigate the local and systemic inflammatory response and haemostatic alterations in the lungs after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) instillation and to determine the feasibility of imaging techniques to quantify lung inflammation in an adapted human endotoxin instillation model. The investigators will also explore whether glucocorticoid treatment can blunt LPS effects.
