Protein Supplementation and Muscle Recovery in Football

Skeletal Muscle DamageMuscle Inflammation2 more

Soccer is an intermittent sport including a high number of powerful actions such as accelerations, decelerations, changes of direction, jumps and impacts that incorporate a strong eccentric component and may therefore lead to skeletal muscle damage. Indeed, match activity is associated with the onset of muscle damage and an acute inflammatory response that result in attenuated performance for as long as 1 to 3 days. In competitive soccer though, multiple matches are performed within a small-time frame resulting in inadequate muscle recovery and reduced field performance. Supplementation with milk proteins following intense exercise protocols has been shown to stimulate protein synthesis and facilitate muscle recovery. Thus, the aim of the present investigation is to examine the effects of milk protein supplementation on muscle recovery and soccer-specific performance during an in-season microcycle with two matches performed three days apart.

Efficacy and Safety of Fenugreek Extract on Markers of Muscle Damage and Inflammation in Untrained...

Muscle DamageInflammation

This is a randomized, repeated measures and double blind study which measures the effect of fenugreek extract on markers of muscle damage and inflammation in non-resistance trained males. Participants will complete baseline testing and then be randomized into groups. Participants will complete a 2 week, split-body resistance training program. They will then return for testing in which they will complete an overreaching protocol for 5 consecutive days. Measurements will be recorded 24 hrs after the fifth day. Participants will resume the training program for one additional week and return for final measurements.

Possible Links Between Inflammation and Lipid Metabolism

SepsisInflammation2 more

It has been recognized lately that sepsis and inflammation has an important impact on lipid metabolism and that the extent of hypocholesterolemia may even be a marker of severity of illness. However, the interplay between inflammation and the marked changes in lipid metabolism remain to be sufficiently understood. Importantly, the exact kinetics of lipid parameters in inflammatory conditions are yet to be explored. This study aims to investigate the interaction between inflammation and lipid metabolism using the human endotoxin model (LPS infusion) in ten healthy volunteers in a single blinded randomized placebo controlled cross-over design.

Influence of Dietary Nitrate on Skin Inflammation

Cardiovascular DiseasesInflammation3 more

This study evaluates the potential anti-inflammatory effects of inorganic dietary nitrate in a model of acute inflammation relevant to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Green leafy vegetables contain large amounts of inorganic nitrate, and research suggests that this nitrate has beneficial effects on the heart and blood vessels. The Ahluwalia Group have shown anti-inflammatory benefits of inorganic nitrate in pre-clinical models of CVD, early mechanistic studies in healthy volunteers, and in patients with hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and those suffering acute heart attacks that translate to cardiovascular benefits. Understanding the mechanism of how this is achieved may open new therapeutic options in CVD. The Investigators therefore wish to explore whether inorganic nitrate might alter inflammatory responses using a blister-model of acute skin inflammation. This study is a randomised control trial with parallel limbs where half of patients receive nitrate-rich beetroot juice, and the other half a nitrate-deplete placebo beetroot juice.

Effects of Corn and Coconut Oils on Lipoprotein Lipids, Insulin Sensitivity and Inflammation

Healthy Men and Women

The objectives of this trial are to assess the effects of corn oil and coconut oil on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations, and other aspects of the fasting lipoprotein lipid profile, as well as insulin sensitivity and an inflammatory marker, in men and women.

Dexmedetomidine Combined With Lidocaine Infusion Affect Inflammation Cytokines

Anesthesia; Reaction

Objective: The present study was to evaluate the effects of dexmedetomidine alone, lidocaine alone and their combined infusion on postoperative inflammation cytokines after Laparoscopic hysterectomy. Methods: Investigators enrolled 160 women with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I and II, aged 40-65 years, and scheduled for elective laparoscopic hysterectomy with general anesthesia from October 2017 to August 2018. The participants were randomly assigned into four groups(n=40 each group): group CON received normal saline infusion, group LIDO received lidocaine infusion (1.5 mg/kg loading, 1.5 mg/kg/h infusion), group DEX received dexmedetomidine infusion (0.5 µg/kg loading, 0.4 µg/kg/h infusion) and group LIDO+DEX received lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg loading, 1.5 mg/kg/h infusion) and dexmedetomidine infusions (0.5 µg/kg loading, 0.4 µg/kg/h infusion). The four groups received an IV bolus infusion of normal saline, lidocaine, dexmedetomidine and lidocaine combined with dexmedetomidine respectively, over 10 minutes before induction of anesthesia, followed by a continuous IV infusion of normal saline, lidocaine, dexmedetomidine and lidocaine combined with dexmedetomidine until abdominal wound closure, respectively. Interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α levels in serum were measured at different time points: before administration of drugs (T1), the end of surgery (T2), postoperative 2 hour (T3) and postoperative 24 hour (T4).

Impact of Contraceptives on Cervico-Vaginal Mucosa

Mucosal InflammationContraceptive; Complications1 more

UMPALA is a research study to look at the effect of four different, approved contraceptives on the cervical and vaginal tissues as well as on factors in the blood. Participants will have a baseline examination then receive one of four approved, marketed contraceptive products. Cervico-vaginal assessments will take place 4 weeks after contraceptive initiation and 3 months after to assess changes in mucosal safety after use of various contraceptive products in young, healthy, HIV uninfected women.

hsCRP Clinical Inflammation Marker for Human Bisphenol A Food Contamination

Inflammation

Dietary intervention studies thus far have failed to be replicable or causal. This is particularly relevant regarding plastic-derived chemicals (PDCs),This first-of-a-kind dietary intervention study explores a potential causal relationship between human serum levels of BPA and High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP)
