Understanding Host-pathogen Interaction in the Respiratory Mucosa During Pregnancy

Pregnancy RelatedInnate Inflammatory Response

The clinical presentation of the ongoing coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic in pregnant women is unique with more asymptomatic infection, higher morbidity when symptomatic, yet without a difference in mortality rate. This is strikingly different from the high mortality observed during the past influenza A pandemics. Though both influenza A virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2 are single-stranded RNA viruses, the exquisite vulnerability of pregnant women to influenza A but not COVID-19 remains a mystery. Our objective, therefore, is to determine the mechanisms that predispose pregnant women to severe influenza A but confer protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection by examining the viral entry factors and innate immune response mechanisms in the nasal epithelium of pregnant vs. non-pregnant age-matched women.

Association of Periodontal Inflammation on Immune Response in Wound Healing

Inflammation of Mouth

Subjects who are in need of extraction of a posterior tooth will be recruited for this study. Prior to extraction, periodontal clinical markers of inflammation, body-mass index and dental radiographs will be measured/taken. The posterior tooth will be atraumatically extracted and a small soft tissue biopsy of the extraction site will be taken. At the two week follow-up, sutures will be removed and another small biopsy of soft tissue will be taken. Subjects will be seen again at 3 months for a final collection of clinical data and radiographs.

Multimodal Imaging of MS Reveals the Smoldering Inflammation

Multiple Sclerosis

To evaluate active MS plaque evolution with conventional MRI, QSM-post processing, TSPO-PET imaging and P2X7-PET imaging.

Residual Inflammation and Plaque Progression Long-term Evaluation

AtherosclerosisMyocardial Infarction2 more

Inflammation drives atherosclerotic plaque rupture triggering most acute coronary syndromes. Despite advances in diagnosis and management of atherosclerosis, patients with myocardial infarction (MI) remain at increased risk of recurrent events. The RIPPLE study aims to examine the relationship between residual coronary inflammation detected by 68Ga-DOTATATE PET in patients treated for MI to long-term plaque progression measured by CT coronary angiography (CTCA). The association between infarct-related myocardial 68Ga-DOTATATE PET and myocardial function and viability will also be assessed.

Effects of Aging and Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy on Vascular Endothelial Function and Metabolic...

TransgenderismGender Identity6 more

This study will examine markers of vascular endothelial function (vascular health) and metabolic profiles in younger versus older transgender women (people who were assigned male at birth but whose gender identity is female). Data will also be compared to those from cisgender women and men.

Molecular Mechanisms Associated With Breast Implant Complications

Breast Implant; ComplicationsInfection or Inflammation

Bacterial biofilms cause implant failures, chronic inflammation, and immune polarization. The study investigates the possible role of bacterial biofilm as a factor in the etiology of Breast Implant Illness. Three patient cohorts will be studied (A) Subjects with breast implant with BII manifestations (B) Subjects with breast implants without BII manifestations (C) Subjects without breast implants who underwent breast surgery procedure. Blood, surgically discarded tissue, implants, and associated capsules will be collected through this protocol.

Investigating the Link Between Type 2 Immunity and NAFLD in Human Obesity

ObesityMorbid2 more

This study is being done to better understand the relationship between inflammation in adipose tissue (AT), abnormal deposition of fat around the liver and how this affects its appearance and function and ultimately insulin resistance.

The Role of Cytomegalovirus and Inflammation on Patient Symptoms and Outcomes in Ovarian Cancer...

Ovarian CancerFallopian Tube Cancer1 more

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a widely prevalent virus in the general US population, has been shown to be associated with increased inflammation and mortality. Previous small pilot studies have demonstrated that latent CMV may be reactivated during chemotherapy in cancer patients, and may be associated with unfavorable cancer outcomes such as fatigue and increased mortality. The central research idea for this study, supported by previous preliminary data, is that CMV reactivation is an unrecognized complicating factor in the treatment of ovarian cancer that impacts patient outcomes. The overarching goals of this observational study are: To assess how CMV infection is associated with ovarian cancer symptoms over the course of the disease and its treatment. To describe the relationship between CMV reactivation in ovarian cancer patients, survival, fatigue, and other QOL outcomes, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally.
