The purpose of this study is to learn more about the effects of walnuts, walnut-oil, almonds and fish oils on blood sugar and insulin levels in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. The hypothesis is that a diet rich in these foods will improve insulin resistance in women with PCOS.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of treadmill training on inflammation in the skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, insulin action in the skeletal muscle, and whole body glucose metabolism in stroke survivors. The fundamental hypothesis of this study is that key inflammatory markers in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle are abnormal, skeletal muscle insulin signaling is impaired, and systemic insulin sensitivity is reduced in hemiparetic stroke patients and that these factors are modifiable and improved by exercise training in stroke patients.

Lipodystrophies represent a therapeutic challenge with regards to insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia and fatty liver which often is coupled with significant adipose tissue loss. The purpose of the study is to examine the safety and efficacy of Leptin on subjects with lipodystrophy.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether the addition of Diamel, a nutritional supplement, to hypocaloric diet and exercise could improve the histological results (steatosis, necro-inflammatory activity and fibrosis), insulin resistance, aminotransferase levels and anthropometric measures in comparison with a placebo-controlled group with hypocaloric diet and exercise during 52 weeks of treatment in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

The overarching aim of this proposal is to examine the effects of usual protein diet supplemented with keto acid (KA) on insulin sensitivity in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). The investigators will achieve this goal through a randomized controlled trial of administration of usual protein diet plus KA versus usual protein diet alone in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) over a period of 6 months. If successful, the results of this study will provide potential avenues for improvement of metabolic profile of patients on PD and possibly improve long-term outcomes such as cardiovascular disease risk and death.

Will metformin improve exercise capacity in chronic heart failure patients who has insulin resistance (pre-diabetic- means before they become diabetic)?

Metformin is an insulin sensitizing drug routinely used for the treatment of anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). To date, the metabolic effects of the long-term metformin administration are know but no data are available on the effects after its suspension. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of metformin suspension on insulin sensitivity in PCOS patients.

To test whether treatment with the angiotensin II receptor antagonist Irbesartan improves insulin sensitivity and metabolic profile in patients with chronic heart failure.
