Remote Study of an Electronic Means to Characterize Bowel Movements in Adult Populations

Irritable Bowel SyndromeHealthy

A remote study to find out if a mobile phone application (HealthMode Stool) can serve as a useful tool to track and characterize daily bowel movements. The application provides participants with a single place to record their bowel movements either as a part of their general health self-monitoring, or because they may be dealing with a bowel movement condition. The minimal study duration is 1 month, and participants can continue using the application up to 2 years.

Effects of a Novel Machine Learning Mobile App on Diet Adherence in Individuals Following the Low...

IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome

A high fermented, oligio-, di-, monosaccharide, and polyols (FODMAP) diet has been shown to exacerbate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Previous literature has shown significant improvement in IBS symptoms after adherence to a low FODMAP diet (LFD); hence, LFD is a viable treatment method for IBS and IBS-like symptoms. However, adherence to the LFD has proven to be difficult with participants stating that information provided by medical practitioners is generalized and nonspecific requiring them to search for supplementary information to fit their individual needs. Notably, studies that have used a combination of online and in-person methods for treatment have shown improved adherence to the LFD. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a novel machine learning dietary mobile application (ML-App) will improve adherence to the LFD compared to a standard online dietary intervention in populations with IBS or IBS-like symptoms over a 4 week period.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for Children With Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGID)FGID According to the Rome III Criteria3 more

The purpose of the trial is to develop a treatment protocol to be used in trials studying internet-delivered CBT for children with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). The study size is not based on power calculations but the estimated sample necessary to develop a treatment protocol. This study will include 20-30 children with FGID and their parents who will be treated individually (face-to-face). The treatment consists of 10 weekly sessions of exposure-based CBT. The study uses a pre- post-design with no control group.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy With Our Without Exposure Therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Patients with a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are recruited by self-referral. They are randomized to two 10 weeks of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral programs. Both programs include mindfulness training, education about how excessive avoidant and control behaviors maintain IBS symptoms, and changing of these behaviors to live a richer life. One of the programs also includes instructions on how to perform systematic exposure. The hypothesis of the study is while both groups will show improvement in terms of IBS symptom severity and quality of life, the addition of systematic exposure will lead to more improvement in symptoms.

SAT vs Escitalopram for Rectal Hypersensitivity

Rectal HypersensitivityIrritable Bowel Syndrome-Constipation

Constipation is a common digestive disorder. After excluding dietary factors, drugs and other secondary causes, at least three broad pathophysiologic subtypes are recognized- dyssynergic defecation, constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) and slow transit constipation (STC), all predominantly affect women and elderly. Many patients also demonstrate abnormal rectal perception with both rectal hyposensitivity and hypersensitivity being common. Recent surveys show that most constipated patients are dissatisfied with current therapy. Also, constipated patients showed significant psychological dysfunction and impaired quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To investigate a novel biofeedback technique of improving rectal hypersensitivity. METHODS: A large compliant balloon attached to a barostat was placed in the rectum in 8 patients with rectal hypersensitivity (urgency/pain threshold <30 mm Hg). Sensory deconditioning was performed by incremental balloon distensions (1-2 mmHg) until normal thresholds were reached.

Irritable Bowel SyndromeSmall Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

The purposes of this study are to estimate the burden of disease due to chronic gastrointestinal illness in PG veterans, to evaluate whether Small Bowel Bacterial Overgrowth (SBBO) is associated with chronic diarrhea in PG veterans, and to determine whether eradication of SBBO reduces symptoms of chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating in PG veterans.
