Renal FailureRenal Insufficiency1 moreThe study evaluate the effect of a membrane in polysulfone covered with vitamin E (ViE15-A, ASAHI Kasey, Tokyo, Japan) versus non-vitamin E polysulfone membrane (REXEED-15A, ASAHI Kasey, Tokyo, Japan) in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care undergoing continuous extracorporeal dialysis (CRRT). The current randomized study is designed to assess the effect on the levels of oxidative stress, pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and the mode and amount of death of monocytic cell lines using ViE 15-A in comparison withe REXEED-15A. The investigators hypothezise that the ViE15-A versus REXEED-15A will have different effect on the levels of oxidative stress, pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines and the mode and amount of death of monocytic cell lines.

Kidney FailureChronic2 moreIntroduction: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is considered an important public health problem, with prevalence of 9.6% in our population. The CKD has as main symptoms fatigue, muscle weakness and poor exercise tolerance, which directly contribute to physical inactivity and low mobility, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality in CKD patients with significant impact on quality of life of these patients. Thus, patients with CKD have poor quality of life, high incidence of cardiovascular diseases, high prevalence of endothelial dysfunction, the consequent increase in arterial stiffness and serum concentration of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). It is believed that the conditioning of these patients may reduce cardiovascular risks and improve the quality of life. Aim of the study: Evaluate the impact of exercise training in relation to functional capacity, quality of life, pulse wave velocity and ADMA in patients with CKD on dialysis. Materials and methods: Is a randomized controlled study, with 34 CKD patients on conservative treatment, divided into control group (with stretching exercises and metabolic exercises) and training group, those undergoing physical training, aerobic and resistance during six months. Before and after exercise training, patients will be assessed using the SF-36 and IPAQ. Also be held assessment of pulse wave velocity, measurement of serum ADMA and spirometry testing. Statistical analysis consisted of t test for independent data or chi-square when appropriate.

Chronic Kidney FailureWeight loss commonly occurs in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), negatively influencing their quality of life, treatment response and survival. Loss of muscle protein is generally a central component of weight loss in CKD patients but patients also have reductions in fat mass and bone density, independent of the severity of the disease state. Attempts to reverse weight and muscle loss in CKD and improve nutritional status by nutritional supplementation have been unsuccessful and there are currently no approved therapies. Purpose of this study is to provide detailed insight in disease related gut function by obtaining information on gut permeability, digestion and absorption of glucose, fat and protein in CKD patients compared to matched healthy controls. Additionally, to examine whether protein and amino acid metabolism is disturbed in CKD patients compared to healthy controls. This will provide required information that will lead to implement new strategies to develop optimal nutritional regimen in order to enhance nutritional status, quality of life and survival in relation to kidney disease.

Screening involves non-invasive urine and blood test and a screening program has already been initiated here in the University of Mississippi HIV clinic. This study looks at the effect of this new screening program. Our Hypothesis is that screening for kidney disease is a cost effective and important addition to the care of patients with HIV.
