Smartphone-based Stress Management Intervention for Employees

StressPsychological

Participants were able to use the application the investigators developed for four weeks. With the application, the participants were able to monitor their stress level and life style patterns. The participants were also provided personalized stress management techniques including psychoeducation and cognitive behavioral technique. In 2014, additional relaxation techniques-abdominal breathing, progressive muscular relaxation, and meditation-were incorporated. Participants' mental health status and life style patterns were evaluated at baseline and at 4 weeks. Pre- and post-intervention statuses were compared after adjusting for degrees of life stress factors. Brief encounter psychosocial instrument (BEPSI-K) score and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) score were used as primary outcome measures.

Mind-Body Therapies in Primary Health Care

Psychological Stress

Mental disorders are among the most common causes of disability globally. Given the high prevalence of mental disorders (57.0%) in Azores islands (Portugal), local primary health care (PHC) services should encourage the implementation of complementary interventions for prevention of this type of disorders. New approaches, such as mind-body therapies, have been studied and recommended for prevention and treatment of numerous chronic diseases, particularly mental disorders. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a 6-months mind-body therapies (yoga, qigong and pilates), in users of Ponta Delgada Health Center (PDHC) with perceived distress, compared to a waiting list control.

Mindfulness Meditation for Cognition and Mood

StressPsychological

The purpose of this pilot study is to collect feasibility and acceptability of an internet mindfulness meditation intervention for older adults and to collect preliminary data on mood and cognition changes from before to after the intervention. Up to 32 older adults will be randomized to receive a mindfulness meditation intervention or a time and attention control, both delivered over the internet (16 completers). Participants will have a one-hour session weekly for six weeks with daily home practice between sessions. Participants will complete the sessions online with a study iPad. Their home practice will also be installed on the study iPad as well as an objective adherence monitoring program that the investigators developed to track actual home practice between sessions. The feasibility and acceptability measures are enrollment rate, completion rate, and participant satisfaction. Self-report mood questionnaires and cognitive tasks will be measured before and after the intervention period and data used to conduct power analyses and sample size estimation for a larger clinical trial.

Impact of Self-awareness in Medical Students

BurnoutStudent4 more

Objectives: The goal of this study is to understand whether self-knowledge, using the Enneagram, has a long-term impact as a modifying factor of the quality of life, self-compassion and compassion of medical students. Methods: An initial sample of 48 medical students answered, before, immediately after and 9 months after an intervention, an online questionnaire with 6 scales. The intervention group took a self-knowledge and communication course based on the Enneagram. The control group was recruited by matching the sociodemographic variables with the intervention group. The data obtained was subject to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis and qualitative content analysis.

A Comparison of Acute Psychobiological Responses to Laboratory Stress Tests

StressPhysiological2 more

The Mannheim Multicomponent Stress Test (MMST) is a validated laboratory stress test that combines cognitive, emotional, acoustic and motivational stress components. However the utility of the MMST as a viable alternative to the more commonly used Trier social stress test (TSST) to elicit HPA reactivity remains unclear as meaningful increases in saliva cortisol (> 2.5 nmol/l) have been shown to occur in <50% of participants yet the TSST typically elicits meaningful increases in saliva cortisol in >70% of participants; likely as a consequence of the greater social evaluative component in the TSST. Using a randomised between groups design, this study aims to compare psychobiological responses to the MMST and TSST.

Impact of Early Intervention on Maternal Stress in Mothers of Fetuses Diagnosed With Single Ventricle...

Heart DefectsCongenital4 more

This study evaluates maternal psychological distress and the impact of early palliative care team consultation on maternal anxiety and depression symptoms, coping, and quality of life/family functioning in the care of neonates born with single ventricle physiology. Half of the participants will receive early palliative care team consultation, while the other half will receive usual care (no or late palliative care intervention). The investigators hypothesize maternal stress, anxiety, and depression will be lower in the palliative care intervention group compared with the control group, and maternal coping mechanisms and perceived quality of life and family functioning will improve at the pre-discharge assessment.
