Eye Movement Behaviour and Pupil Size in Natural Outdoor and Indoor Scenes
Light SensitivityIn this study, the researchers will be using eye tracking and detailed lighting measurements to understand how different types of indoor and outdoor lighting affect the eye movements and pupil sizes of our participants. Participants will be paired up and undergo six eye tracking sessions, split across two appointments. Each appointment will involve viewing either indoor or outdoor scenes, and before each session, participants will spend time adapting to the lighting conditions. Overall, each participant will spend 24 minutes being tracked, and the entire study will take about 2-3 hours to complete. The investigators expect differences in eye movements and pupil size between indoor and outdoor scenes.

Migraine DisordersPhotophobiaThe purpose of this study is to determine if a special coating, applied to the surface of glasses can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches in children and adolescents. This study is being conducted by researchers at Primary Children's Medical Center, The John Moran Eye Center, and the University of Utah Department of Electrical Engineering. The investigators have determined that a specific frequency of light is particularly bothersome to migraine patients. The coating they've developed is designed to block this frequency of light. Very few treatments are approved for the treatment of childhood migraine. The investigators hope that these glasses will provide a safe way to improve headaches in children.

Participants will receive an intervention of an 8-week MBCT course modified for visual symptoms, which will involve 8 weeks of once weekly group sessions and home practice between sessions.

Migraine DisordersPhotophobiaApproximately 9% of men and 18% of women suffer from migraine headaches. Almost all migraine sufferers report light sensitivity during a headache. Some people with migraine report that light can trigger their migraines and some people with migraine are light sensitive all of the time. The investigators have recently determined that certain colors of light are more likely to trigger migraines than other colors. In this study the investigators want to know if people who wear glasses that block these colors of light will have fewer migraine headaches.
How Can we Treat Photophobia in Migraine
Migraine DisordersPhotophobiaPhotophobia, the aberrantly increased sensitivity to light, is a common symptom in migraine patients and light discomfort is frequently found as a trigger for migraine attacks. In behavioral studies, planned exposure to light was found to reduce headache in migraineurs with photophobia, potentially by increasing habituation to this migraine trigger. Here, neurophysiological mechanisms of light exposure versus light deprivation therapy in migraine patients are investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Migraine patients and healthy controls receive light exposure therapy (Flash) and light deprivation therapy (Dark) for one hour daily on 7 consecutive days, in a crossover design with a wash-out period of three months. Study participants keep a diary including items on interictal and ictal photophobia, headache frequency and severity 7 days before, during, and 7 days after the interventions. One week before and one day after both interventions, fMRI using flickering light in a block design is applied. Functional activation is analyzed at whole-brain level and habituation of the visual cortex (V1) is modeled with the initial amplitude estimate and the corrected habituation slope.
