Dietary Nitrate in COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

The acute consumption of dietary nitrate has been shown to improve exercise capacity in athletes, healthy adults and subjects with peripheral vascular disease. Many COPD patients have reduced exercise capacity, The investigators hypothesized that acute nitrate consumption, in the form of beetroot juice, might increase incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) distance in COPD subjects.

Preventing Respiratory Health Problems in Bakery Employees

Chronic Obstructive Lung DiseaseRhinitis

The study is a follow-up of investigations done in the years 1999-2002 in bakery employees. The main purposes are to look at the associations between flour dust exposure and respiratory disease, and to find out the best ways to reduce the flour dust levels in the working environment.

Sensitivity of the Step Test to Detect Improvement in Dyspnea Following Bronchodilation in Patients...

Moderate Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary DiseaseSevere Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease1 more

During the previous phases of the project (Phase I and II), two new field tests have been designed and validated for an integration in a primary care setting in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). These new field tests are 3-min paced-walk test (3MPWT) and 3-min paced step test (3MPST). If the validity and sensitivity of the TM3 could be highlighted, particularly by the reduction of dyspnea level following bronchodilatation, Phase II highlight that the 3MPST does not allow to detect this decrease of dyspnea after bronchodilatation. The use of too high step rates could explain these results through a hypothesis relative to neuromechanical coupling of dyspnea. The main objective of this trial is to follow the investigations on the sensitivity of 3MPST to detect the effects of pharmacological intervention on the exertional dyspnea in COPD patient. The hypothesis of this work is that the use of lower step rates cadences could allow to detect an improvement of exertional dyspnea following treatment-induced bronchodilatation, contrary to higher step rates.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Effects on Cognitive Functioning, Mood, Anxiety, and Quality of Life in...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD

The purpose of this project is to investigate whether a 12-week, fulltime pulmonary rehabilitation program can enhance cognitive functioning, mood, anxiety, and quality of life in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Breathing-swallowing Interaction in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients - Impact of Non...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)Decompensated COPD With (Acute) Exacerbation

In the investigators' knowledge there are no data about the impact of non invasive mechanical ventilation on the breathing-swallowing interaction. Our main objective is to evaluate breathing-swallowing interaction in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients hospitalized in intensive care unit for an acute exacerbation, and evaluate the impact of using non invasive mechanical ventilation (NIV)

Breathing Control in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

COPD

There is a demand for explorative and comparative studies on various non-pharmaceutical efforts in treating and helping chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. This study has been developed in light of this need. The main purpose of the project is to test whether a device guided breathing control system can decreasing the feeling of breathlessness in patients with moderate stage and severe stage of COPD. In addition the study could shed light on whether a reduced feeling of breathlessness can lead to improved physical function, and less experience of other symptoms (I.e., depression, anxiety, sleeping difficulties, fatigue, pain) and provide a better quality of life for patients with COPD.

Magnesium is Associated With QoL in COPD: A Cross-sectional Study

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between serum concentrations of vitamin D, Magnesium and Calcium in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and the potential impact of these parameters on lung function and quality of life.

Anticipatory & Preventive Team Care (APTCare): At Risk Patients of Family Health Networks

DiabetesChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease2 more

The University of Ottawa and Élisabeth Bruyère Research Institute are conducting a study of preventive care for frail patients at risk of functional decline. At risk patients are assigned by chance to continue receiving their standard care from their family physician or receive additional care from a nurse practitioners and a pharmacist. In collaboration with the family physician, they develop an individualized care plan, a treatment and management road plan, for each patient, which they implement over the study period of one approximately year. The objective of the study is to compare the effectiveness of the model of care that includes the nurse practitioners and pharmacist against standard care in preventing functional decline, to determine the acceptability of this model of care to patients, their caregivers and the medical team, and to evaluate the cost implication of the program.
