Intestinal MalabsorptionCritical Illness1 moreIn the current study, we willquantitate the difference in digestion and absorption kinetics of dietary whole protein versus free amino acids in vivo in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit suffering from malabsorption. 16 adult, mechanically ventilated ICU patients with clinical signs of malabsorption (faecal weight >350 g/day) will be included. All patients will receive a primed continuous intravenous infusion of L-[ring2H5]-phenylalanine and L-[3,5-2H2]-Tyrosine for the duration of the study period. After reaching an isotopic steady state (1.5 hours), patients will receive either [1-13C]- phenylalanine labelled milk protein or free amino acids with an identical constitution and [1-13C]-phenylalanine. Main study endpoint will be the splanchnic extraction of phenylalanine, calculated from systemic [1-13C]- and L-[ring2H5]-phenylalanine enrichment.

These interventions include, among other things, strengthening of community care groups (NASGs); home visits with delivery of behavioral change communication about nutrition, health and hygiene (WASH) for young children; distribution of a preventive nutritional supplement; and improved coverage of wasting screening (family MUAC and community screening), management, adherence to treatment and prevention of relapse in the health district of Koutiala, Sikasso region, Mali, West Africa.

Effect of African Leafy Vegetables on Nutritional Status of South African School Children.
Iron StatusVitamin A Status2 moreThe combination of poverty-related infectious and lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases, both driven by malnutrition, causes a high burden for South Africa. Healthy and nutritious diets for populations depend on availability and accessibility of a variety of plant and animal foods, within a context that promotes and supports healthy behaviour. Food based strategies, such as supplementation, food fortification, and diversification of crops, are used to achieve optimal dietary requirements to combat malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies. A more sustainable food based strategy is the (promotion of) use of indigenous and traditional foods, such as African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs). Unfortunately, several studies from all over Africa have shown that there is a shift from traditional diets as result of the preparing techniques and the absence of women in homes. Furthermore, indigenous and traditional foods are considered as "poor people's food". Against this background, a joint project between South Africa, Kenya and Benin is designed to fill the gaps in knowledge in these countries regarding the availability, acceptability and consumption and evidenced based benefits of foods from local biodiversity. The main aim of the study in South Africa is to provide empirical evidence of how the role of biodiversity can be translated into improved health status in contemporary poor rural and urban communities in the North West Province of South Africa. In order to achieve this it is important to gain knowledge on the possibility of using ALVs as a strategy to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies. Therefore an intervention study to determine the effect of selected ALV on the nutritional status (including zinc, iron, and vitamin A status) of school children (grade R-4) residing in contemporary poor rural community in the North West Province, South Africa has been designed.

Can Mass Media Campaigns Reduce Child Mortality
DiarrhoeaMalaria3 moreA cluster-randomised trial will be undertaken in Burkina Faso to investigate whether a comprehensive mass media campaign using local radio stations can change behaviours on a scale large enough to result in measurable and sustainable reductions in under-five child mortality. It is hypothesised that as a result of the scale and multi-pronged nature of the campaign, reductions of between 10% and 20% in child mortality will be achieved.
Can Protein Intake be Increased by Offering Protein-enriched Foods and Drinks?
UndernutritionThe objective of this study is to investigate whether a protein-enriched daily menu is acceptable and effective in increasing protein intake in elderly in a residential care home up to an intake of 1,2 gram/ kg body weight per day. The investigators hypothesise that when elderly eat 2 slices of bread, 1 portion of juice and 1 portion of soup each day, the protein intake can be increased by at least 20 grams/day. On average this can lead to an intake of 1,2 gram/ kg body weight per day.
