Deworming and Vitamin A (DEVTA) Prepilot Study
MalnutritionWorm Infestation1 moreBackground. More than a third of the world's population is infected with intestinal nematodes. A majority of these infections occur in children. Current control approaches emphasise treatment of school age children, and there is a lack of information on the effects of deworming preschool childrenSetting: Within the Integrated Child Development System (ICDS) infrastructure in urban Lucknow (UP), IndiaDesign: Open Labeled randomised trialHypothesis: Our study hypothesis was that albendazole administration six monthly, as a single 400 mg dose in syrup, by the existing health care delivery system would be a practicable way to achieve mass deworming of preschool children and this might result in an improvement in weight gain of preschool childrenIntervention One group will receive usual health care by the existing health care staff, which included six monthly administration of Vitamin A concentrate. The other group will receive, in addition, 400 mg of albendazole (Zentel, Smith Kline & Beecham) in 10 ml syrup form. Five such doses will be given at six monthly intervals for 2 years.Main objective: To assess the impact of 6 monthly deworming on weight and height gain at the end of 2 years in children aged 1 to 5 years of age Main outcomes measures: Weight gain in 2 yearsInclusion criteria: Children 1 to 5 years, whose guardians give written informed consent. Exclusion criteria: Those not consentingSample size: Sample size was calculated for a continuous outcome. For a standardized effect size of 0.1, with a power of 80% and an alpha level of 0.05, using a 2-tailed t test, taking into account design effect, about 2000 children will be included in each arm.

Somatic-psychosocial Care Concept for Oncologic Patients Undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation...
Oral MucositisMalnutritionThis study will test the SCION (Self care improvement through oncology nursing)-HSCT program a multi-modular, somatic-psycho-social care intervention to improve self management in oncologic patients undergoing HSCT. The study will determine if the self management skills of the patients to enhance: physical activity, prevention of oral mucositis and mal nutrition during the period of hospitalization. It is hypothesized that patients who receive the multi-modular somatic-psycho-social care intervention will have better health related quality of life (HRQoL).
Study of Nutrition Regimens in Treating Patients With Cancer of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract
Head and Neck CancerInfection1 moreRATIONALE: It is not yet known which regimen of enteral nutrition is more effective in preventing infections in patients undergoing surgery for cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is comparing three nutrition regimens in treating patients with cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract.
Evaluating the Relative Effectiveness of Two Front-of-pack Nutrition Labels
Diet HabitDiet Modification3 moreIn efforts to promote a healthy diet, the Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) has attempted to use Front-of-Pack (FOP) labelling to supplement traditional nutrition labelling. The Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) identifies food items within a specific category of foods as healthier choices. The original logos were enhanced to include additional information focusing on particular macronutrients, taking one of two themes; it either indicates that a product contains more of a healthier ingredient, or less of a less healthy ingredient. However, there is a lack of scientific evidence on the role of the existing symbols in assisting consumers make healthier food purchasing decisions. Thus far, studies have established that the United Kingdom's Multiple Traffic Lights (MTL) label, and the new French Nutri-Score (NS) label, are amongst the top performers. However, there is little consensus on which is the most effective FOP label to promote diet quality. Thus, the investigators propose to conduct the following: Use a three arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) and an experimental fully functional web-based grocery store to test two competing approaches of front-of-pack (FOP) labelling on measures of diet quality: 1) United Kingdom's Multiple Traffic Lights label (MTL) or 2) France's Nutri-Score (NS) labelling scheme. The investigators hypothesize that diet quality as measured by the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI-2010) (primary outcome) will be highest in the NS arm, followed by MTL, and lowest in the no logo control arm.
Asili Evaluation in the Democratic Republic of Congo
DiarrheaCough3 moreThe South Kivu province of DRC has experience continuous armed conflict over the last several decades; as a result, livelihoods and health metrics are uniformly poor. Thus, the objective of this study is to determine if an integrated set of social enterprises can improve child health while offering viable and scalable new business opportunities for the community. Specific research questions include the impact of the individual enterprises on (1) child health, (2) access to clean water, and (3) economic opportunities in the region.
The Impact on School Feeding on Children's Growth and Development
MalnutritionIn order to improve child nutrition, the Poverty Reduction Strategy adopted by the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has called for the initiation of a school feeding programme for primary school children living in poor and disadvantaged families and communities where the prevalence of child malnutrition is high. Accordingly, a pilot feeding programme is planned for implementation in Government and NGO schools in 10 Upazilas in rural Bangladesh with the aim of: 1) enhancing the nutritional status and growth of younger school-going children by reducing micronutrient deficiencies and providing a protein/calorie supplement; 2) improving learning capacity and attentiveness in the classroom; 3) increasing enrollment, attendance and completion rates and 4) supporting the goals of achieving universal primary education and reducing gender disparity. The objectives of the proposed baseline survey respond to GoB's aims: To assess the nutrition status of younger school-going children prior to the initiation of a school feeding programme, thus enabling the later assessment of programme impact on micronutrient deficiencies and anthropometric indicators. To assess the cognitive performance and school attendance of children prior to the initiation of a school feeding programme thus enabling the later assessment of programme impact on school enrollment and attendance, and learning capacity. The baseline study will be conducted using a cluster randomized study design in which schools represent clusters. Seven schools will be randomly selected from each of 7 Upazilas out of 10 that have been selected for intervention. A control group will be included in study design consisting of 7 schools selected randomly from 7 comparable yet adjacent Upazilas not slated for inclusion in the feeding programme. Use of a control group will enable later evaluations to attribute possible improvements in key impact/outcome variables to the intervention itself. A mid term evaluation will be conducted 6 months after the baseline survey. Finally, an impact evaluation will be conducted on the same children 10-14 months after the baseline survey.
