Mobile Intervention for Simultaneous Alcohol and Marijuana Use in Young Adults
Alcohol DrinkingCannabis UseThe goal of this treatment development project is to develop an adaptive ecological momentary intervention (a-EMI) for young adults using marijuana and alcohol that is grounded in self-regulation and social cognitive theories. To determine the most efficacious intervention strategies, the investigators will test variations of intervention components to identify the best combination. The study will take place at the Center for Integrated Health Care Research at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii (KPHI), located in Honolulu (island of Oahu). Following pilot testing with 6 participants, the study team will assess the feasibility and efficacy of intervention components on two primary outcomes (negative consequences and protective behavioral strategies [PBS]) using a fractional factorial experimental design, with post-intervention assessment and one- and three-month follow-ups. 136 diverse young adults recruited from KPHI who report current simultaneous alcohol and marijuana (SAM) use will be randomly assigned to one of eight groups, representing experimental conditions that include or do not include intervention strategies focused on craving reduction and PBS. As a result of this process, individual and/or combined components that lead to improved outcomes will be retained in a subsequent randomized controlled trial, while ineffective components will be eliminated.

Longitudinal Study of Xenon-129 MRI Imaging Effects of Cannabis Smoking

Participants will be followed over a period of 3 years, and impacts of cannabis smoking on the lungs will be measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using hyperpolarized xenon-129 gas, pulmonary function tests, exercise capacity, computed tomography images and questionnaires.
Cannabis THC Potency, Metabolism, and Cognitive Impairment in Young Adults
Cannabis UseTHC3 moreThe goal of this interventional study is to determine the impact of high potency THC product use on cognitive function of young adults aged 21-25. The main question it aims to answer is: will cannabis users who switch to less potent THC products demonstrate improved cognitive function compared to baseline? Other questions this study aims to answer include: Can researchers accurately assess THC consumption among frequent cannabis users? Can researchers effectively incentivize cannabis users to use less potent THC products? Do genetic variations in THC metabolism impact urinary THC excretion? Do genetic variations in THC metabolism impact cognitive performance in cannabis users? Are quantitative urinary THC values predictive of cognitive impairment? How can researchers use research findings to inform harm reduction practices for people who use cannabis? Participants will submit blood and urine samples and be incentivized to use less potent THC products.
THC + CBD and Memory Study

There is evidence that some decrements attributable to the primary psychoactive ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), may be attenuated by cannabidiol (CBD). This study will help us learn more about the relationship between THC and CBD consumption with memory processes. A combination of MRI and neuropsychological tests (which are computer and paper/pencil tasks) will be used to measure the neurocognitive and behavioral impacts of THC and CBD use.

Alcohol DrinkingMarijuana SmokingThis study will focus on treating substance abusing incarcerated teens using individually administered Motivational Interviewing (MI) followed by group Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). The control group receives individualized Relaxation Training (RT) followed by group Treatment as Usual (TU). Currently, there is little research regarding effective group treatments for incarcerated teens and this study will address this gap in our knowledge base. We seek to reduce substance use and associated risky behaviors post-release (including driving under the influence, risky sexual behaviors, etc.)

This is a behavioral intervention study that will test a 6-session, small-group, peer-network intervention among adolescent males and females and their friends. The intervention primarily focuses on reducing risky sexual behavior and increasing condom use among adolescent males and females, aged 16-19. The concurrent use of alcohol and marijuana during sex is also a focus as these two substances are widely used among adolescents and fuel risky sexual behavior.
