Computer-delivered Screening & Brief Intervention for Marijuana Use in Pregnancy

Marijuana UsePregnancy

Marijuana is by far the mostly commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy, and prenatal exposure to marijuana can have lasting negative effects. However, current answers to this problem are failing to reach most women who use marijuana while pregnant. This project will develop and begin testing two technology-based, highly practical interventions that could reduce the number of children who are prenatally exposed to marijuana.

Development and Testing of a Smartphone Application to Reduce Substance Use and Sexual Risk Among...

Alcohol UseMarijuana Use1 more

A pilot trial (N=60) will be conducted to test the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of OnTrack (a smartphone application to self-monitor substance use and sexual behaviors among homeless young adults) plus a brief motivational intervention (BMI), in comparison to treatment as usual (TAU) at Covenant House New York (CHNY) for those with substance abuse problems and who engage in risky sex. Following referral, screening, and eligibility determination, 60 participants will complete informed consent and be randomly assigned to one of two conditions: 1) TAU or 2) OnTrack + BMI. All participants will be assessed at baseline, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks after baseline to evaluate alcohol consumption, marijuana use, HIV sexual risk behaviors, and other relevant variables.

Brief Voluntary Alcohol and Drug Intervention for Middle School Youth

Alcohol DrinkingCigarette Smoking1 more

We are currently working in 16 middle schools across Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Torrance to test out a voluntary after school program called Project CHOICE, which focuses on helping students decrease their alcohol and drug use. We are conducting surveys in all schools over three years and providing the intervention in 8 schools in the 2008-2009 school year and in the other 8 schools in the 2011-2012 school year. This is a program we have provided before in middle schools and we found that it was effective in curbing alcohol and drug use among students who voluntarily attended and among all students at the intervention school.

Marijuana Use, Strength Training, and Alcohol Consumption (MUSTAC) Study

Chronic Pain

Self-medication of pain by consuming alcohol and marijuana is common. However, the research regarding pain as a determinant for alcohol and marijuana use has relied on laboratory pain induction paradigms with limited clinical relevance. The study will assess demand for alcohol and marijuana before and after delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) induction in co-users. This will provide a clinically relevant, but time-limited, model for the effects of musculoskeletal pain on demand.

An Exercise App to Reduce Young Adults' MJ Use

Marijuana Smoking

Currently, marijuana (MJ) is the most popular illicit drug, but there are few effective interventions to help young adults (age 18 to 25 years) to reduce their MJ intake. In this study, we will develop and initially test a smart phone app designed to promote exercise/physical activity as a positive alternative to MJ use. The app will be tested in an efficacy study in which MJ users are randomly to either receive personalized feedback about MJ use + use the exercise app or personalized feedback only. The results will contribute to knowledge about exercise/physical activity as a strategy for reducing young adults' MJ use and problems.

Motivational Interviewing and Culture for Urban Native American Youth (MICUNAY)

Alcohol UseMarijuana Use

The investigators plan to develop and test a new alcohol and other drug (AOD) intervention for urban AI/AN youth, "Motivational Interviewing and Culture for Urban Native American Youth (MICUNAY)." This intervention integrates tradition-based activities and motivational interviewing (MI). The investigators will intervene at both the community and individual level. At the individual level, they will provide MICUNAY to adolescents. At the community level, they will provide discussion of AOD prevention at Community Wellness Gatherings (CWG). This work is important because they will gain an understanding of how well a tradition-based healing program that integrates MI works to prevent AOD use among urban AI/AN youth.
