Wolman/CESD Natural History Chart Review and Longitudinal Follow-Up

Wolman DiseaseCholesterol Ester Storage Disease2 more

The purpose of this study are: to characterize and understand the natural history of disease progression in WD and CESD, and to provide historical controls for WD and CESD for developing clinical treatment trials. The hypothesis is that the variability and clinical progression in WD and CESD is large and represents a continuum of severities from a lethal infantile to near normal adults with only "fatty livers".

Correlation of Glucose and Lipid Metabolism Levels With Vitiligo

Metabolism DisorderGlucose3 more

The goal of this observational study is to compare serum glucose and lipid metabolism levels between health volunteers and vitiligo patients. The main question it aims to answer is whether vitiligo is related to glucose and lipid metabolism disorders. Participants will complete a vitiligo questionnaire and test serum levels of indicators related to glucose and lipid metabolism. Researchers will compare vitiligo patients with healthy volunteers to see if there is a correlation between vitiligo and disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism.

Glucose, Activity, Diet, & Sleep Assessment Study

Metabolism DisorderGlucose

GLADS is a cross-sectional, observational study assessing free-living diet, physical activity, sleep, and glucose profile over a 2-week period in healthy adult men and women.

Pharmacokinetics Study of Gamma-aminobutyric Acid

Diabetes MellitusDiabetes Mellitus6 more

The purpose of this study is to determine upon administering GABA orally to a person how it is absorbed, distributed, as well as the drug's pharmacological effects on the body such as glucose levels, serum C-peptide and/or insulin levels (referred to as pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics). We will conduct experiments in normal subjects to address these questions.

Pre-operative Blood Lipid Level and Post-operative Major Adverse Cardiac Event

Lipid Metabolism DisordersPostoperative Complications

Whether the pre-operative blood lipid level and post-operative cardiovascular events is associated is unknown. This study is to find out the main blood lipid and relative protein level change and the post-operative cardiovascular events occurrence.

Evaluation of Arginine in Periodontal and Cardiovascular Disease

Metabolic DisorderArginine; Hyperaminoaciduria

Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) plays a key role in endothelial function and may be a link for the known interaction of periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CHD). The investigators compared the impact of gingival health, periodontitis (CP), CHD or of both diseases (CP+CHD) on saliva and serum ADMA levels.

Monitoring the Hyperammonaemia:TOXicity of Drugs (AmmoTOX)

HyperammonemiaMetabolic Disease2 more

Several drugs and chemotherapies seem to have an impact on the metabolic system. This study investigates reports of metabolic toxicities such as hyperammonemia, including the International classification of disease ICD-10 for treatments in the World Health Organization (WHO) global Individual Case Safety Report (ICSR) database (VigiBase).

Lipid Metabolism in Obese Subjects Undergoing Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery CandidateLipid Metabolism Disorders1 more

The aim of the study is to evaluate modifications in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and biosynthesis of the lipid mediators N-acylethanolamines (NAE), both known to induce and be induced by the nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-α, which may also explain the well-established improved lipid and energy metabolism after bariatric surgery. The study is focused on understanding the weight loss mechanisms in order to develop targeted dietary protocols.

Effects of Lansoprazole on Bone Turnover Markers

Bone Turnover Rate DisorderCalcium Metabolism Disorders

Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) has increased in recent years. There are concerns that PPIs have possible negative effects on bone metabolism. It has been suggested that PPIs may reduce the absorption of calcium from the small intestine and lead to bone resorption by affecting osteoclastic activity. In this study, it is planned to investigate the effects of lansoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, on bone turnover markers in pediatric patients with gastroesophageal reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Incidence of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders After TIPS in Cirrhotic Patients

Cirrhosis Portal

Decompensated cirrhosis is associated with sarcopenia. TIPS is an efficient treatment of portal hypertension. Based on our retrospective data, TIPS induces in 30% of cirrhotic patients metabolic disorders associated with diabetes or pre-diabetes. The main objective is to measure the cumulative incidence of diabetes and pre-diabetes 6 months after TIPS insertion.
