The Effect of Probiotics on Obesity. Metabolic Endotoxemia and Inflammation

In spite of the growing evidence for the beneficial effects of probiotics, their anti-obesity effects are not well examined. No previous studies were conducted in this research area in the UAE. Hence, the aims of this study are to 1) Investigate the link between metabolic derangements associated with obesity and levels of LPS and LBP; 2) Study the relatedness of low grade inflammation with the ME; 3) Investigate the food intake assessment; and 4) Investigate the effectiveness of probiotics supplement on the obesity, ME and inflammation. This project will have two phases: 1) a cross-sectional, in which 250 adults will be recruited for the collection of anthropometric measures, food intake, and fasting blood samples to measure serum LPS, LBP, Lipid profile, IR, insulin-like growth factor, hs-CRP, IL-6, and glucose. 2) Intervention phase, in which 50 overweight subjects will be randomly assigned to either receive a daily probiotic (25 subjects) or a placebo capsule (25 subjects) during the intervention period.

In this study, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in psoriatic and psoriatic arthritis patients as well as the parameters of metabolic syndrome will be examined. At the same time, the levels of omentin and visfatin adipokines associated with metabolic syndrome and obesity will be measured by measuring the disease severity (by PASI psoriasis, clinical activity score for psoriatic arthritis). The patients who accepted to participate in the study , who were admitted to the dermatology outpatient clinic were included in the study. For the blood tests required after the examination, 2 tubes of blood will be taken for the measurement of omentin and visfatin. 80 psoriasis, 40 psoriatic arthritis and 60 healthy volunteers were planned to be studied. AHA / NHLBI, 2005 (revised ATP III criteria) criterion for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome will be used. Omentin and visfatin levels are compared with the severity of the disease for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and it will be examined whether it is proinflammatory or antiinflammatory.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a health concern among Asians. Growing evidence indicates that Korean Americans had higher MetS prevalence compared to non-Hispanic Whites, but a culturally and linguistically appropriate lifestyle intervention has not been developed for Korean American middle-aged and older women. Thus, the investigators propose to develop a 4-week lifestyle intervention (Women's Active Living for Koreans (WALK) Study) to increase physical activity (PA) and reduce sedentary behavior for Korean American women.

Isomaltulose VS Sucrose - Postprandial Effect on Incretin Profile and Second Meal Effect

This study evaluates the different postprandial effect of isomaltulose and sucrose on the incretin profile and as an determinant for the second meal effect. In this nutritional intervention study, healthy participants and T2DM patients ingest 2 standardized meals for breakfast and lunch in combination with either sucrose or palatinose on 2 separate days. In addition, blood samples are taken to analyze markers of the carbohydrate metabolism, incretins and specific inflammation markers.

Continuous Tart Cherry Juice Supplementation With Metabolic Syndrome Participants

The present study examined the effect of Montmorency tart cherry juice on functional and blood-based cardio-metabolic markers in humans with Metabolic Syndrome. Participants consumed Montmorency tart cherry juice or a placebo beverage continuously for 7 days in a randomised, crossover trial. Outcome variables were measured immediately prior to supplementation and post-supplementation. Furthermore, on the 7th day of supplementation outcome variables were measured pre- and up to 5 hours post-bolus. It was hypothesised that Montmorency tart cherry juice would improve cardio-metabolic markers, particularly fasting insulin and systolic blood pressure. Furthermore, the study aimed to identify the mechanism of action for any effects of Montmorency tart cherry juice on blood pressure.

This pilot study will assess the feasibility of a gratitude intervention to promote physical activity, and well-being and positively impact biomarkers of health among older African American breast cancer survivors. The intervention will also include a goal-setting component to promote exercise readiness and examine the cultural phenomena of the Superwoman schema among Black women.

Fermented Dairy Products and The Metabolic Syndrome

The study will be conducted as a randomized controlled trial with four parallel arms including four dairy products. We will investigate the health effects of including yogurt in the diet through a 16-weeks intervention period among 100 volunteering males with symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. The study has a total duration of 20 weeks as a wash out period of four weeks will be initiated prior to the intervention.

Evaluation of a Physical Activity Referral Scheme

The study will evaluate the effectiveness of a co-developed exercise referral scheme. Participants will be recruited to one of three groups 1. Co-developed exercise referral scheme, 2. Usual care exercise referral scheme, 3. No treatment control (no intervention). The study will measure effectiveness by observing change in cardiorespiratory fitness at 12 weeks. Intervention cost-effectiveness will also be evaluated at 3 months follow-up using objective physical activity data.
